Thesis Abstract

Abstract
This thesis investigates the effects of virtual reality (VR) rehabilitation on balance and gait in stroke survivors through a randomized controlled trial (RCT). Stroke survivors commonly experience deficits in balance and gait, which significantly impact their quality of life and independence. Emerging technologies like VR offer innovative approaches to neurorehabilitation by providing engaging, interactive, and task-specific interventions. However, the effectiveness of VR-based rehabilitation specifically targeting balance and gait outcomes in stroke survivors remains underexplored. The study design involves a RCT with stroke survivors randomized into two groups the experimental group receiving VR rehabilitation and the control group receiving conventional therapy. The primary outcomes measured include balance performance assessed through standardized tests like the Berg Balance Scale and gait parameters evaluated using gait analysis techniques. Secondary outcomes encompass functional mobility, activities of daily living, and quality of life assessments. The literature review highlights the existing evidence on the use of VR in stroke rehabilitation, emphasizing its potential benefits in enhancing motor recovery and functional outcomes. Various studies have shown promising results in improving balance, gait, and overall motor function through VR interventions. However, the specific effects of VR rehabilitation on balance and gait in stroke survivors necessitate further investigation to establish its efficacy and clinical relevance. The research methodology section outlines the study design, participant recruitment criteria, intervention protocols, outcome measures, data collection procedures, and statistical analysis plan. The study aims to recruit a sample of stroke survivors meeting specific inclusion criteria to ensure homogeneity and generalizability of results. The VR rehabilitation program will be tailored to individual needs and progressions, with regular assessments to monitor changes in balance and gait parameters over the intervention period. The discussion of findings will present the results of the RCT, including comparisons between the experimental and control groups on primary and secondary outcomes. The interpretation of findings will elucidate the potential impact of VR rehabilitation on balance and gait outcomes in stroke survivors, discussing clinical implications, challenges, and future research directions. In conclusion, this thesis contributes to the growing body of knowledge on VR rehabilitation in stroke survivors, particularly focusing on its effects on balance and gait. The study aims to advance understanding of the potential benefits of VR interventions in improving functional outcomes and quality of life for individuals post-stroke. By elucidating the efficacy and feasibility of VR-based rehabilitation, this research has implications for optimizing neurorehabilitation strategies and enhancing patient-centered care in stroke rehabilitation settings.
