Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability worldwide, often resulting in impaired balance and gait function. Virtual reality therapy has emerged as a promising intervention for stroke rehabilitation, offering interactive and engaging exercises to improve motor function. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of virtual reality therapy in enhancing balance and gait in stroke patients through a randomized controlled trial. The research design involved recruiting stroke patients with balance and gait impairments and randomly assigning them to either a virtual reality therapy group or a conventional therapy group. The virtual reality therapy group received sessions using a virtual reality system tailored to address specific balance and gait challenges, while the conventional therapy group underwent traditional physiotherapy interventions. Both groups underwent pre- and post-intervention assessments to evaluate changes in balance and gait parameters. The literature review highlighted the benefits of virtual reality therapy in stroke rehabilitation, emphasizing its potential to enhance motor learning, engagement, and motivation compared to conventional therapy approaches. Key themes explored included the principles of neuroplasticity, task-oriented training, and feedback mechanisms within virtual reality environments. The methodology section detailed the recruitment process, inclusion criteria, outcome measures, intervention protocols, and data analysis methods employed in the study. Outcome measures included standardized balance and gait assessments, such as the Berg Balance Scale and Timed Up and Go test, to quantify improvements in functional mobility and stability. Findings from the study indicated that stroke patients who underwent virtual reality therapy demonstrated significant improvements in balance and gait parameters compared to those receiving conventional therapy. Virtual reality therapy was associated with enhanced postural control, reduced fall risk, and improved gait symmetry, highlighting its potential as an effective intervention for stroke rehabilitation. The discussion section analyzed the implications of the study results, emphasizing the clinical relevance of virtual reality therapy in optimizing functional outcomes for stroke survivors. The integration of virtual reality technology in rehabilitation settings was explored, along with considerations for individualized treatment plans and ongoing support for patients. In conclusion, this research contributes to the growing body of evidence supporting the effectiveness of virtual reality therapy in enhancing balance and gait function in stroke patients. The findings underscore the importance of implementing innovative and engaging interventions to promote recovery and improve quality of life for individuals affected by stroke-related impairments. Further research is warranted to explore long-term effects, optimal dosing strategies, and patient preferences in virtual reality rehabilitation programs.
