Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Stroke is a leading cause of disability worldwide, often resulting in impaired balance and reduced functional mobility in affected individuals. The use of Virtual Reality (VR) technology has emerged as a promising intervention in stroke rehabilitation, offering a novel approach to enhancing motor recovery and functional outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of VR technology in improving balance and functional mobility in stroke patients through a randomized controlled trial. The research design involved a randomized controlled trial with stroke patients assigned to either a VR intervention group or a conventional therapy control group. The VR intervention group received customized VR-based balance training exercises targeting specific motor impairments, while the control group underwent standard physiotherapy interventions. Outcome measures included assessments of balance, functional mobility, and quality of life, conducted at baseline, post-intervention, and follow-up time points. The findings of this study revealed that stroke patients who underwent VR-based balance training demonstrated significant improvements in balance performance and functional mobility compared to those receiving conventional therapy. The VR intervention group exhibited enhanced postural control, reduced fall risk, and improved gait parameters following the intervention period. Moreover, participants in the VR group reported greater motivation, engagement, and satisfaction with the rehabilitation process, highlighting the potential benefits of incorporating VR technology into stroke rehabilitation programs. The results of this study contribute to the growing body of evidence supporting the effectiveness of VR technology in stroke rehabilitation, particularly in improving balance and functional mobility outcomes. The integration of immersive VR environments and interactive feedback mechanisms offers a dynamic and engaging platform for enhancing motor learning and neuroplasticity in stroke survivors. This research underscores the potential of VR-based interventions as a valuable adjunct to traditional rehabilitation approaches, providing a more personalized and interactive rehabilitation experience for individuals recovering from stroke. In conclusion, the findings of this study support the use of VR technology as an effective tool for improving balance and functional mobility in stroke patients. Incorporating VR-based interventions in stroke rehabilitation programs holds promise for enhancing recovery outcomes, promoting greater engagement in therapy, and improving overall quality of life for individuals post-stroke. Future research should continue to explore the long-term effects and optimal implementation strategies of VR technology in stroke rehabilitation to maximize its clinical benefits and facilitate broader adoption in clinical practice.
