Thesis Abstract

Abstract
This thesis investigates the effectiveness of virtual reality (VR) rehabilitation in enhancing balance and mobility among stroke survivors through a randomized controlled trial. Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability globally, often resulting in impaired balance and mobility. Traditional physiotherapy interventions have shown benefits in stroke rehabilitation, but there is growing interest in utilizing innovative technologies like VR to enhance outcomes. This study aims to contribute to the existing body of knowledge by evaluating the impact of VR rehabilitation on balance and mobility in stroke survivors compared to conventional physiotherapy approaches. The research design is a randomized controlled trial, with participants randomized into two groups a VR rehabilitation group and a control group receiving traditional physiotherapy. The intervention period is set at 12 weeks, during which participants will undergo regular therapy sessions. Outcome measures include balance assessments using standardized tools such as the Berg Balance Scale and mobility assessments using tests like the Timed Up and Go test. Data will be collected at baseline, post-intervention, and follow-up time points to evaluate the effectiveness of VR rehabilitation on balance and mobility outcomes. The literature review provides a comprehensive overview of existing studies on VR rehabilitation in stroke rehabilitation, highlighting the potential benefits and challenges associated with this innovative approach. Key themes explored include the neuroplasticity mechanisms underlying VR interventions, the impact of VR on balance and mobility outcomes, and the user experience of stroke survivors engaging with VR technology. The research methodology section outlines the study design, participant recruitment process, intervention protocol, outcome measures, data analysis methods, and ethical considerations. The discussion of findings chapter presents the results of the randomized controlled trial, comparing the effectiveness of VR rehabilitation to traditional physiotherapy in improving balance and mobility outcomes among stroke survivors. Factors influencing participant adherence, satisfaction, and engagement with VR technology are also explored. In conclusion, the study contributes valuable insights into the potential of VR rehabilitation as an effective intervention for enhancing balance and mobility in stroke survivors. The findings have implications for clinical practice, highlighting the importance of integrating innovative technologies like VR into stroke rehabilitation programs. Recommendations for future research and implications for healthcare professionals working with stroke survivors are discussed, emphasizing the significance of personalized, technology-enhanced rehabilitation approaches in improving functional outcomes and quality of life for individuals post-stroke.
