Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Stroke is a leading cause of disability worldwide, often resulting in balance and motor function impairments. Virtual reality (VR) rehabilitation has emerged as a promising intervention for stroke patients to improve their functional outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of VR rehabilitation in enhancing balance and motor function in stroke patients through a randomized controlled trial (RCT). The research design involved a sample of stroke patients randomly assigned to either a VR rehabilitation group or a conventional therapy group. Various VR rehabilitation programs targeting balance and motor function were implemented for the intervention group, while the control group received traditional physiotherapy interventions. Outcome measures included balance assessments, motor function tests, and quality of life assessments administered at baseline, post-intervention, and follow-up time points. The results of the study indicated that stroke patients who underwent VR rehabilitation demonstrated significant improvements in balance and motor function compared to those receiving conventional therapy. Specifically, the VR group exhibited enhanced postural control, gait parameters, and upper extremity function. These improvements were maintained at the follow-up assessment, suggesting the long-term benefits of VR rehabilitation in stroke rehabilitation. Furthermore, the study found that VR rehabilitation was well-received by patients, with high levels of engagement and motivation reported during the intervention sessions. The immersive and interactive nature of VR technology provided a stimulating environment for rehabilitation, contributing to better adherence and outcomes. In conclusion, this RCT study provides compelling evidence supporting the effectiveness of VR rehabilitation in improving balance and motor function in stroke patients. The integration of VR technology into traditional rehabilitation protocols offers a novel and engaging approach to stroke rehabilitation, with the potential to enhance functional recovery and quality of life for individuals post-stroke. Future research should continue to explore the optimal implementation strategies and long-term effects of VR rehabilitation in stroke rehabilitation practices.
