Thesis Abstract

Abstract
This thesis investigates the effectiveness of virtual reality exercises in enhancing balance and gait in elderly individuals. With the aging population on the rise globally, maintaining functional mobility and reducing the risk of falls among older adults is a critical public health concern. Virtual reality (VR) technology has emerged as a promising intervention tool in physiotherapy to address balance and gait impairments. This study aims to provide valuable insights into the potential benefits of incorporating VR exercises into the rehabilitation programs for elderly individuals. The research design is a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative outcome measures and qualitative feedback from participants. A comprehensive literature review was conducted to explore the existing evidence on the use of VR in balance and gait training among older adults. The review revealed a growing body of research supporting the effectiveness of VR interventions in improving physical function and reducing fall risk in this population. The methodology chapter outlines the research design, participant recruitment criteria, intervention protocol, outcome measures, and data analysis procedures. A sample of elderly individuals will be recruited from local community centers and rehabilitation facilities to participate in the VR exercise program. Pre- and post-intervention assessments will include standardized tests such as the Berg Balance Scale, Timed Up and Go test, and gait analysis using motion capture technology. The findings chapter will present the quantitative results of the study, analyzing improvements in balance and gait parameters following the VR exercise intervention. Additionally, qualitative feedback from participants will be reported to provide insights into their experiences and perceptions of using VR technology for rehabilitation purposes. The discussion section will interpret the results in the context of existing literature, highlighting the implications for clinical practice and future research directions. In conclusion, this thesis contributes to the growing body of knowledge on the potential benefits of virtual reality exercises in improving balance and gait in elderly individuals. The significance of this study lies in its practical implications for physiotherapy practice, offering a novel and engaging approach to enhancing functional mobility and reducing fall risk among older adults. Recommendations for integrating VR technology into rehabilitation programs for elderly populations will be discussed, emphasizing the importance of personalized and progressive exercise interventions tailored to individual needs.
