Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Stroke is a leading cause of disability worldwide, often resulting in impairments in balance and gait. Conventional rehabilitation techniques have shown some effectiveness in improving these impairments; however, there is a growing interest in the use of virtual reality (VR) as a novel approach to enhance rehabilitation outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of VR rehabilitation in improving balance and gait in stroke patients through a randomized controlled trial. The research design employed a randomized controlled trial with stroke patients randomized into two groups the experimental group receiving VR rehabilitation and the control group receiving conventional therapy. The intervention period lasted for 6 weeks, with assessments conducted at baseline, post-intervention, and follow-up. Outcome measures included balance assessments using the Berg Balance Scale and gait analysis using the Timed Up and Go test. Results from the study demonstrated significant improvements in balance and gait parameters in the VR rehabilitation group compared to the control group. Specifically, participants in the VR group showed a greater improvement in balance scores and gait speed post-intervention and at follow-up assessments. Additionally, qualitative feedback from participants highlighted high levels of engagement and motivation during VR rehabilitation sessions. The findings of this study suggest that VR rehabilitation can be an effective intervention for improving balance and gait in stroke patients. The immersive and interactive nature of VR technology provides a motivating environment for rehabilitation, potentially enhancing treatment outcomes. Further research is warranted to explore the long-term effects of VR rehabilitation and its potential integration into clinical practice. In conclusion, this study contributes to the growing body of evidence supporting the use of VR technology in stroke rehabilitation. By harnessing the benefits of VR, clinicians and therapists can offer innovative and engaging interventions to improve balance and gait outcomes in stroke patients, ultimately enhancing their quality of life and functional independence.
