This study investigates how auditory branding constructs, signals, and sustains identity within the Bay Area jazz club scene, addressing the gap in empirical evidence on sensory marketing practices in niche live music venues and their impact on consumer perceptions and venue performance. The aim is to develop a theoretically grounded understanding of how sonic elements—ambient soundscapes, musical programming, PA system voice, logo jingles, and staff sonic cues—shape brand meaning, audience loyalty, and competitive positioning. Specific objectives are (1) to identify the core auditory branding elements employed by representative Bay Area jazz clubs; (2) to examine the relationship between these sonic cues and customer perceived authenticity, quality, and visit intention; (3) to assess the moderating role of audience typologies (local jazz aficionados vs. casual tourists) on sonic branding effectiveness; (4) to evaluate the financial and reputational implications of auditory branding strategies for venue performance; and (5) to propose a framework linking sonic branding activities to stakeholder experiences within live music contexts. A mixed-methods approach was adopted. The population comprises all active jazz clubs within the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area as of 2024. A stratified sample of 18 clubs was drawn to ensure representation across price tiers, venue sizes, and genres (bebop, modern jazz, and fusion). Quantitative data were collected through a structured survey administered to 360 patrons across 18 clubs (20 respondents per site) and 36 club managers/owners via semi-structured interviews. Instruments combined a validated auditory branding scale, adapted from sensory branding measures, with measures of perceived authenticity, quality perception, and behavioral intention. The qualitative component consisted of in-depth interviews and a thematic analysis of 24 club transcripts focusing on practice rationales, governance of sound branding, and listener responses. The study extends sensory branding and signaling theory by integrating live-music venue specifics, highlighting the role of auditory branding as a strategic asset in competitive cultural experiences. Methodologically, it demonstrates a robust mixed-methods design tailored to small- to mid-sized music venues, including a validated instrument for sonic branding and a multi-level analytic framework. Practically, the research offers a diagnostic toolkit for club managers a taxonomy of sonic branding elements, best-practice guidelines for harmonizing acoustics, communication, and programming, and a decision framework linking sonic investments to customer outcomes and performance metrics. The conclusion posits that intentional, authentically styled auditory branding enhances brand equity and patron loyalty within the Bay Area jazz venue ecosystem, provided it aligns with the venue’s artistic ethos and audience expectations. Recommendations include developing a standardized sound branding playbook for clubs, investing in acoustical design that supports branding narratives, training staff in consistent sonic cues, and implementing longitudinal tracking of visitor perceptions and financial indicators to refine branding effectiveness over time.
