Thesis Abstract

Abstract
The escalating threat of drug-resistant bacteria poses a critical challenge to public health worldwide. In response to this challenge, the present study delves into the investigation of the antimicrobial potential of plant extracts as a promising alternative to combat drug-resistant bacteria. The primary aim of this research is to explore the efficacy of plant extracts in inhibiting the growth of drug-resistant bacterial strains and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of action. The study begins with a comprehensive review of the literature on plant-based antimicrobials, highlighting the historical uses of plant extracts in traditional medicine and their potential in modern pharmacology. The review also discusses the mechanisms by which plant compounds exert antimicrobial activity, including disruption of bacterial cell membranes, inhibition of essential enzymes, and modulation of bacterial gene expression. Methodologically, a series of experiments are conducted to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of selected plant extracts against a panel of drug-resistant bacterial strains. The extraction methods employed ensure the retention of bioactive compounds in the plant extracts, while the bacterial strains are carefully selected to represent a diverse range of drug resistance profiles. The antimicrobial assays include determination of minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) to assess the potency of the plant extracts. The results of the antimicrobial assays reveal promising inhibitory effects of the plant extracts against drug-resistant bacteria, with several extracts demonstrating potent antimicrobial activity at relatively low concentrations. Furthermore, the study investigates the synergistic effects of combining plant extracts with conventional antibiotics, aiming to enhance the efficacy of existing antimicrobial treatments and possibly overcome antibiotic resistance. In the discussion of findings, the mechanisms of action of the active plant compounds are elucidated, shedding light on their interactions with bacterial targets and potential pathways for resistance development. The implications of these findings for the development of novel antimicrobial agents and therapeutic strategies are thoroughly examined, emphasizing the importance of harnessing the antimicrobial potential of plant extracts in combating drug-resistant bacteria. In conclusion, this thesis provides valuable insights into the antimicrobial potential of plant extracts against drug-resistant bacteria, highlighting their significance as a rich source of bioactive compounds with promising therapeutic applications. The findings of this study underscore the urgent need for further research and clinical trials to harness the full potential of plant-based antimicrobials in addressing the global challenge of antibiotic resistance.
