Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Drug-resistant bacteria pose a significant threat to public health, leading to an urgent need for alternative antimicrobial agents. The aim of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial properties of plant extracts against drug-resistant bacteria. A comprehensive literature review was conducted to identify relevant studies on the topic, highlighting the increasing prevalence of drug-resistant bacteria and the limitations of current antibiotic therapies. The research methodology involved the extraction of plant compounds using various solvents and the evaluation of their antimicrobial activity through agar well diffusion assays. Ten plant extracts were selected based on their traditional use in ethnomedicine and screened against a panel of drug-resistant bacterial strains, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli. The results of the study revealed that several plant extracts exhibited potent antimicrobial activity against the drug-resistant bacterial strains tested. Notably, extracts from Plant A and Plant B demonstrated broad-spectrum activity, inhibiting the growth of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative drug-resistant bacteria. The antimicrobial efficacy of the plant extracts was further confirmed through minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) assays, showing promising potential as alternative antimicrobial agents. Furthermore, the study investigated the mechanisms of action of the active plant compounds, revealing their ability to disrupt bacterial cell membranes and inhibit essential microbial processes. The findings of this study underscore the potential of plant extracts as a valuable source of novel antimicrobial agents for combating drug-resistant bacteria. The implications of this research extend to the development of alternative therapeutic strategies to address the global challenge of antimicrobial resistance. The significance of this study lies in its contribution to the field of microbiology and antimicrobial research, offering insights into the bioactive properties of plant extracts and their application in combating drug-resistant pathogens. Future research directions may focus on elucidating the specific bioactive components of the plant extracts and optimizing their antimicrobial efficacy through synergistic formulations or nanoparticle delivery systems. In conclusion, the exploration of plant extracts as antimicrobial agents against drug-resistant bacteria represents a promising avenue for addressing the escalating threat of antimicrobial resistance. This study provides a foundation for further research in the field of natural product-based antimicrobials and underscores the importance of harnessing the therapeutic potential of plant-derived compounds in combating drug-resistant infections.
