Thesis Abstract

Abstract
This study focused on the microbiological examination of powdered tobacco sold in Enugu Urban to determine the presence of pathogenic bacteria. The analysis aimed to assess the potential health risks associated with the consumption of powdered tobacco products in the region. A total of 50 samples were collected from various vendors in different locations within Enugu Urban. The samples were processed and analyzed using standard microbiological techniques to isolate and identify pathogenic bacteria. The results of the study revealed the presence of various pathogenic bacteria in the powdered tobacco samples, including Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., and Staphylococcus aureus. These bacteria are known to cause a range of illnesses in humans, including gastrointestinal infections, food poisoning, and skin infections. The high prevalence of pathogenic bacteria in the powdered tobacco samples indicates a potential health hazard for consumers in Enugu Urban. In addition to the microbiological examination, the study also analyzed the qualities of locally produced cement in the region. The analysis focused on key quality parameters such as compressive strength, setting time, and fineness of the cement samples. A total of 30 samples were collected from different local cement production sites and tested according to standard procedures. The results of the cement quality analysis revealed significant variations in the properties of the locally produced cement samples. While some samples met the required standards for compressive strength and setting time, others showed deviations that could affect the performance of the cement in construction applications. The fineness of the cement samples also varied, indicating differences in the manufacturing processes and raw materials used by local cement producers. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the microbiological quality of powdered tobacco sold in Enugu Urban and the characteristics of locally produced cement in the region. The findings highlight the need for improved quality control measures in the production and sale of powdered tobacco products to ensure consumer safety. Similarly, the variability in the qualities of locally produced cement calls for enhanced monitoring and regulation to maintain standards and promote the use of high-quality cement in construction projects.
