In the context of frequent natural hazards and evolving media ecosystems in Kerala, this study investigates how local radio serves as a channel for disaster communication, emergency alerts, and community resilience, addressing gaps in timely, accessible, and credible information dissemination during crises. The problem addressed is the inconsistent reach and effectiveness of disaster-related messaging in rural and peri-urban communities, where delays or misinterpretations can exacerbate vulnerabilities. The aim is to assess the effectiveness of local radio broadcasts in shaping residents’ disaster awareness, preparedness actions, and adaptive behavior during Kerala’s emergency broadcasts, with specific objectives to (1) evaluate audience reach and accessibility of local radio during disasters, (2) examine the content quality, credibility, and timeliness of emergency broadcasts, (3) analyze the relationship between radio exposure and emergency preparedness actions, (4) identify barriers to effective communication and information uptake, and (5) propose a framework for enhancing local radio practices in disaster scenarios. The study adopts a mixed-methods design, integrating quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to triangulate findings. The population comprises residents of Kollam, Ernakulam, and Thrissur districts who were exposed to at least one major disaster broadcast over the past five years. A stratified random sample of 600 households will be surveyed to quantify exposure, comprehension, and preparedness actions, complemented by 40 in-depth interviews with local radio journalists, disaster management officials, community leaders, and volunteers to capture production processes, credibility judgments, and dissemination challenges. Data collection instruments include a structured questionnaire for households and semi-structured interview guides for broadcasters and stakeholders. Validity will be enhanced through pilot testing (n=40) and expert review; reliability will be assessed via Cronbach’s alpha for scale-based measures (target ? ? 0.70). Content analysis is anticipated to reveal timely, action-oriented messages with consistent crisis updates, though challenges such as technical outages, linguistic diversity, and urban-rural digital divides may persist. Qualitative insights are expected to highlight the importance of community radio personnel credibility, community liaison networks, and the integration of radio with other disaster-management channels (SMS alerts, social media) to overcome reach gaps. The study contributes to knowledge by providing empirical evidence on the role of local radio in disaster risk communication within a specific South Indian context, refining theoretical understandings of media credibility, risk communication, and community resilience, and offering a validated framework for enhancing local broadcast practices. Policy implications include recommendations for capacity-building in emergency scripting, rapid-response newsroom routines, partnerships with district disaster management authorities, standardized broadcast protocols, and investment in accessible broadcast technologies to ensure inclusive reach. Practical recommendations for practitioners encompass audience segmentation strategies, standardized checklists for message clarity, and continuous monitoring and evaluation of broadcast effectiveness. The main conclusion posits that well-coordinated local radio broadcasts, embedded within an integrated, multi-channel emergency communication system, significantly enhance community preparedness and response during Kerala’s disasters, with scalable implications for similar regional contexts.
