Abstract
Community journalism plays a crucial role in poverty alleviation programs in Nigeria by providing a platform for local voices to be heard and issues to be addressed. This research explores the relevance of community journalism in the context of poverty alleviation in Nigeria by examining how community journalists engage with and empower marginalized communities. Through a qualitative research approach involving interviews and content analysis of community journalism outlets, this study reveals the ways in which community journalism contributes to poverty alleviation efforts in Nigeria. The findings suggest that community journalism serves as a vital tool for raising awareness about poverty-related issues at the grassroots level. By giving voice to community members who are directly affected by poverty, community journalists help to shed light on the root causes and consequences of poverty in Nigeria. Moreover, community journalism plays a crucial role in advocating for policy changes and social interventions that can address the systemic issues leading to poverty in the country. Furthermore, community journalism fosters community engagement and participation in poverty alleviation programs. Through their reporting, community journalists mobilize local resources and support for poverty alleviation initiatives, creating a sense of ownership and empowerment among community members. By highlighting success stories and best practices within local communities, community journalism also inspires hope and resilience among those living in poverty. In addition, community journalism serves as a watchdog, holding government officials and policymakers accountable for their actions in addressing poverty. By monitoring and reporting on the implementation of poverty alleviation programs, community journalists play a critical role in ensuring transparency and accountability in governance. This, in turn, helps to prevent corruption and mismanagement of resources meant for poverty alleviation. Overall, this research underscores the importance of community journalism in poverty alleviation efforts in Nigeria. By amplifying the voices of the marginalized, fostering community engagement, and promoting accountability, community journalism contributes significantly to addressing poverty at the grassroots level. As Nigeria continues to grapple with high levels of poverty, the role of community journalism in raising awareness, mobilizing support, and advocating for change remains essential in driving sustainable development and poverty reduction in the country.
