Thesis Abstract

The proliferation of social media platforms has fundamentally transformed political communication, particularly among youth demographics in urban environments, raising critical questions about its influence on political engagement and participation. This study investigates the impact of social media usage on youth political engagement in urban areas, aiming to elucidate the mechanisms through which digital platforms shape political behaviors and attitudes among young urban residents. The specific objectives are to examine the extent of social media use for political purposes among youth, identify the types of political content consumed, analyze the relationship between social media engagement and offline political participation, and explore the psychological and social factors mediating this relationship. Employing a cross-sectional survey research design, the study targeted young residents aged 18-30 within the metropolitan city of Rivertown, with a population of approximately 2 million urban inhabitants. A stratified random sampling technique was used to select a sample size of 400 participants, ensuring representation across age, gender, educational background, and socioeconomic status. Data collection instruments included a structured questionnaire, developed based on prior validated scales, and complemented by semi-structured interviews with 20 purposively selected respondents to gain in-depth insights. To ensure validity and reliability, the questionnaire was pretested with 50 respondents outside the primary sample, with Cronbach’s alpha coefficients exceeding 0.75 across all constructs. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression analysis to assess the strength and nature of relationships between social media usage and political engagement. Theoretical underpinnings are anchored in the Agenda-Setting Theory and the Technology Acceptance Model, which provide a framework for understanding how media content influences perceptions and behaviors, and the Diffusion of Innovations Theory to interpret patterns of social media adoption and use among youth. Expected findings suggest a positive correlation between active social media engagement—such as sharing political content, participating in online discussions, and following political leaders—and increased levels of political awareness, efficacy, and offline political participation among urban youth. It is anticipated that factors like digital literacy, peer influence, and perceived relevance of social media content significantly mediate this relationship. Furthermore, the study expects to identify variations in engagement patterns based on demographic variables, with implications for targeted political communication strategies. This research contributes novel empirical evidence to the discourse on digital media's role in fostering youth political participation within urban contexts, filling gaps in literature regarding the mediating factors and the differential impacts based on socio-demographic characteristics. It advances understanding of the interplay between social media behaviors and political activity, offering theoretical contributions to media effects and political communication theories. The main conclusion underscores the critical role of social media as an empowering tool for youth political engagement, albeit with boundary conditions imposed by digital literacy and content relevance. The study recommends policymakers and civic organizations leverage social media platforms for youth outreach and political education, emphasizing the need for digital literacy programs to maximize engagement potentials. Future research should explore longitudinal designs and larger samples across diverse urban settings to validate and extend the findings, with particular focus on the evolving nature of social media technologies and content dynamics in shaping youth political landscapes.

Thesis Overview

This research explores how social media influences the way young people in urban areas participate in politics. It looks into whether platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram encourage youth to become more aware of political issues, share their opinions, and actively engage in political processes such as voting, protests, or community organizing. The study is important because, increasingly, social media has become a primary channel for political communication, especially among youth, yet understanding how it shapes their political behavior remains limited. This gap in knowledge makes it difficult to develop effective strategies to involve young people in democracy through digital platforms. The researcher will conduct a survey among 400 young adults aged 18-30 living in a major city. The survey will include questions about their social media habits, political interests, and engagement activities. To deepen understanding, focus group discussions will also be held with selected participants. Data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics to understand general trends, and regression analysis to examine relationships between social media usage and levels of political participation. The analysis will help identify whether particular activities on social media (e.g., sharing political content, following political figures) are linked to increased political engagement. This study aims to contribute to the existing knowledge by clarifying the role social media plays in motivating youth participation in politics within urban settings. It will also identify specific types of social media activities that are most influential, providing policymakers, educators, and political organizations with practical insights to better engage young voters through digital means. The expected outcome is a detailed understanding of social media’s impact on youth political involvement, along with recommendations for leveraging these platforms to foster greater democratic participation among youth. Ultimately, the research intends to support the development of targeted communication strategies that can enhance political awareness and activism in the digital age.
