Thesis Abstract

Abstract
The influence of social networks on the academic adjustment of in-school adolescents has garnered significant attention in recent research. This study aimed to explore the multifaceted ways in which social networks, both online and offline, impact the academic experiences and outcomes of adolescents within the school environment. By examining the interactions between social network characteristics and academic adjustment, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics at play in adolescents' lives. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive data on the subject. The study sample consisted of in-school adolescents from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, with a focus on understanding how their social networks influenced their academic performance, motivation, and overall adjustment to school life. The quantitative analysis revealed correlations between the size and composition of social networks and academic outcomes, highlighting the significance of peer relationships in shaping adolescents' educational experiences. The qualitative findings provided rich insights into the nuanced ways in which social networks influence various aspects of academic adjustment. Themes such as peer support, social comparison, and peer pressure emerged as key factors impacting students' motivation, self-esteem, and study habits. Additionally, the role of online social networks in providing academic assistance and emotional support was highlighted as a significant aspect of adolescents' academic lives. Overall, the results of this study underscore the importance of considering social network dynamics in understanding and supporting adolescents' academic adjustment. By recognizing the influence of peers, family, and online connections on students' educational experiences, educators and policymakers can develop targeted interventions to enhance academic outcomes and promote positive social interactions within schools. The findings suggest that fostering supportive peer relationships and providing resources for students to navigate online social networks can contribute to improved academic adjustment and overall well-being among in-school adolescents. This research contributes to the existing literature on adolescent development and educational psychology by elucidating the intricate ways in which social networks shape academic experiences. By shedding light on the interconnected nature of social relationships and academic adjustment, this study provides valuable insights for educators, parents, and policymakers seeking to create supportive environments for adolescents to thrive academically and socially.
