Thesis Abstract

In the contemporary digital age, social media platforms have emerged as crucial spaces for political communication, particularly among youth populations, whose engagement with traditional political processes appears to be declining. Despite the widespread use of social media for political campaigns, there remains limited empirical evidence to quantify its impact on fostering active political participation among young individuals. This study aims to examine the influence of social media campaigns on youth political engagement, with specific objectives to identify the key features of social media content that motivate political involvement, measure the relationship between social media exposure and political behaviors, and analyze the role of perceived credibility and social identity in shaping engagement levels. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study combines quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to provide a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon. The target population comprises youth aged 18-30 in urban centers, with a sample size of 400 respondents for the survey through stratified random sampling and 20 participants selected purposively for in-depth interviews. Data collection instruments include a structured questionnaire measuring frequency of social media use, political activity, and perceptions of social media content, alongside interview guides exploring motivations and barriers to engagement. Validity and reliability are ensured through expert review of instruments, a pilot study, and Cronbach’s alpha analysis. Quantitative data will be analyzed using multiple regression analysis to determine predictors of political engagement and hierarchical linear modeling to account for nested data structures, while qualitative data will be subjected to thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke’s approach. It is anticipated that findings will demonstrate a statistically significant positive relationship between exposure to targeted social media campaigns and increased political participation, mediated by perceived message credibility and social identity factors. Specifically, features such as interactive content, peer endorsement, and emotionally resonant messaging are hypothesized to enhance engagement levels. The results are expected to contribute to theoretical understanding by extending the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Social Identity Theory within the context of political communication, highlighting how interactive digital environments influence political motivation and actions among youth. This research will fill existing gaps by providing empirical data on the causal relationship between social media campaigns and youth political activity, addressing contextual variables such as message framing and platform-specific effects. It will inform practitioners and policymakers about effective digital campaign strategies to mobilize youth votes and civic participation, emphasizing the importance of credibility and social identity in message design. The main conclusion posits that social media campaigns, when strategically designed to foster peer influence and trust, can significantly enhance youth political engagement, thereby contributing to democratic vitality. Based on these findings, it is recommended that political communicators prioritize interactive, credible content, and leverage social identities to maximize mobilization efforts among young populations. Future research is suggested to explore longitudinal effects over election cycles and comparative studies across different cultural contexts, thereby deepening the understanding of digital influence on youth political behavior.

Thesis Overview

This research aims to understand how social media campaigns influence young people's interest and participation in politics. In recent years, social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram have become important tools for political communication, especially among youth. However, there is limited detailed knowledge about how these campaigns actually affect young people's political attitudes and actions, such as voting, sharing political content, or joining protests. This gap in understanding makes it hard for political organizers, educators, and policymakers to design effective strategies to engage youth in the democratic process. The study will explore the relationship between social media political campaigns and youth engagement by focusing on a specific urban area with a diverse youth population. It will involve gathering data from a sample of around 300 young adults aged 18-25, using online surveys and focus group discussions. The surveys will collect quantitative data on social media usage, exposure to political content, and political behavior, while focus groups will help gain deeper insight into the motivations and perceptions behind their actions. Data analysis will include statistical techniques such as correlation analysis and regression analysis to identify relationships between exposure to social media campaigns and political participation levels. The thematic analysis of focus group discussions will provide contextual understanding of the factors influencing youth engagement. The research will be guided by theories like the Uses and Gratifications Theory and the Political Communication Theory, which help explain why young people engage with social media and how campaigns shape their political attitudes. The expected outcome is a clearer picture of how social media campaigns influence youth political involvement, including recognizing effective campaign features. The study will contribute new knowledge to the field of political communication by identifying the key mechanisms through which social media can motivate youth participation. Ultimately, the findings will help practitioners craft more targeted and engaging social media strategies to foster higher political engagement among young people.
