Thesis Abstract

In an era characterized by digitally mediated communication, social media platforms have emerged as pivotal tools for fostering civic engagement among youth, yet limited empirical insights exist regarding the effectiveness of specific campaign designs in this domain. This study aims to design, implement, and evaluate a targeted social media campaign intended to enhance civic participation among young adults aged 18 to 25 in urban settings. The primary objectives are to assess the campaign’s influence on civic knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors, and to identify key factors mediating engagement levels. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research integrates quantitative data collected through a structured survey administered to a sample of 500 young adults—selected via stratified random sampling from university and community groups—with qualitative insights obtained through focus group discussions involving 40 participants. The survey instrument was validated through pilot testing and demonstrated high internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.89). Quantitative data are analyzed using advanced statistical techniques, including multiple regression analysis to examine the predictive power of campaign exposure on civic engagement indicators, and paired-sample t-tests to measure pre- and post-intervention shifts. The thematic analysis is applied to qualitative data to explore participants’ perceptions of campaign strategies and barriers to participation. Guided by the Theory of Planned Behavior and the Elaboration Likelihood Model, the study hypothesizes that better-designed content and interactive features will positively influence civic engagement by shaping normative beliefs and enhancing message processing. It is expected that the findings will demonstrate a statistically significant increase in participants' civic knowledge and active participation post-campaign, with factors such as message credibility, peer influence, and platform usability significantly mediating outcomes. The research is anticipated to contribute novel insights into the mechanisms through which social media campaigns influence youth civic behaviors, addressing an evidentiary gap in the literature concerning tailored campaign design and its measurable impacts. The detailed evaluation of campaign components will inform best practices for civic communication practitioners and policymakers aiming to harness social media for youth engagement initiatives. The study concludes that strategic content framing, interactive engagement, and platform-specific customization are critical for optimizing civic campaign effectiveness. Based on the findings, specific recommendations are advanced including the integration of participatory content, peer-led advocacy, and the utilization of analytics-driven feedback for iterative campaign refinement. The thesis underscores the need for ongoing research into longitudinal impacts and the potential of emerging digital platforms to sustain youth civic involvement beyond isolated campaigns, thus offering a comprehensive framework for future scholarly investigations and practical implementations in digital civic education strategies.

Thesis Overview

This research focuses on understanding how a social media campaign can influence young people's participation in civic activities, such as voting, community service, or advocacy. As social media becomes a major platform for communication and activism, it is important to explore whether and how targeted campaigns on these platforms can motivate youth to become more engaged in civic life. Despite the widespread use of social media, there is limited detailed evidence about what types of campaign strategies are most effective and how these campaigns impact youth behavior and attitudes toward civic duties. The study aims to fill this gap by designing a social media campaign aimed at increasing civic engagement among young people aged 18 to 24, then evaluating its impact. The specific objectives include identifying the key messages that resonate with youth, measuring changes in civic knowledge and willingness to participate, and understanding the campaign's overall effectiveness. The researcher will adopt a mixed-methods approach—combining quantitative and qualitative methods. The population will include 500 young people selected through stratified random sampling from urban universities. Data will be collected using structured online surveys before and after the campaign to measure changes in civic attitudes and behaviors, complemented by focus group discussions to gain deeper insights into participants’ perceptions and experiences. The quantitative data will be analysed using statistical techniques such as t-tests and regression analysis to determine the campaign’s impact, while thematic analysis will be used to examine qualitative responses. The study will contribute new knowledge about effective digital strategies for civic education and engagement, providing practical recommendations for NGOs, government agencies, and social media organizations. Expected outcomes include identifying the most compelling campaign messages, demonstrating a measurable increase in youth civic participation, and offering a framework for future social media-based civic engagement initiatives. The findings will help improve the design and implementation of social media campaigns aimed at fostering sustained civic involvement among youth.
