Thesis Abstract

In an era marked by the rapid proliferation of digital communication, social media platforms have emerged as pivotal tools influencing political participation and engagement across diverse demographic groups. This study addresses the differential impact of social media on political engagement within urban and rural contexts, recognizing that the digital divide and socio-economic disparities may shape unique patterns of political communication and participation. The primary aim is to conduct a comparative analysis of how social media influences political engagement in these distinct settings, with specific objectives to identify the levels of social media usage for political purposes, assess the nature and extent of political engagement facilitated through social media, and examine the factors mediating these relationships in urban and rural populations. The research employs a mixed-methods design, integrating quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to provide a comprehensive understanding of the phenomena. The quantitative component targets a total population of approximately 10,000 residents in the metropolitan and rural districts of the region, from which a stratified random sample of 500 participants (250 urban, 250 rural) is selected to ensure representativeness. Data collection instruments consist of structured questionnaires measuring social media usage patterns, political interest, participatory behaviors, and socio-demographic variables, supplemented by semi-structured interview guides to explore contextual factors influencing engagement. Quantitative data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, t-tests, and multiple regression analysis to establish relationships between social media use and political engagement levels across settings. A factorial ANOVA will be conducted to test for differences between urban and rural areas concerning social media influence on political participation. Qualitative data will undergo thematic analysis, employing NVivo software to identify recurring themes related to perceived barriers, motivations, and cultural factors affecting political communication on social media platforms in both contexts. Expected findings suggest significant differences in the nature and extent of social media-driven political engagement between urban and rural residents. Urban users are anticipated to demonstrate higher levels of active participation, such as online campaigning and civic activism, whereas rural users may exhibit more passive engagement, such as following political content for information. Social media’s role as an informational conduit and mobilization platform is expected to be more prominent in urban areas, while rural engagement is hypothesized to be constrained by infrastructural limitations, literacy levels, and socio-cultural factors. The study hypothesizes that socio-economic status, political interest, digital literacy, and social capital serve as mediators influencing engagement levels within each setting. This research contributes to existing literature by providing empirical evidence on contextual variations in digital political communication, filling notable gaps concerning rural digital engagement dynamics in developing regions. It extends the applicability of the Technology Acceptance Model and the Political Participation Framework by integrating rural-urban distinctions, offering a nuanced understanding of social media’s democratizing potential. The main conclusion indicates that social media significantly influences political engagement, but its impact varies markedly between urban and rural populations due to infrastructural, cultural, and socio-economic factors. Based on these findings, the study recommends tailored digital literacy programs, infrastructural improvements in rural areas, and context-specific civic education initiatives to enhance digital political participation. Additionally, policymakers should consider localized communication strategies that leverage the strengths of each setting, ensuring inclusive political engagement through social media. The study further advocates for longitudinal research to monitor evolving patterns of digital political behavior amidst ongoing technological and socio-economic changes.

Thesis Overview

This research aims to explore how social media influences political engagement differently in urban versus rural areas. Political engagement refers to activities like voting, participating in campaigns, discussing politics, or joining protests. With the rapid growth of social media, understanding its role in encouraging or shaping political participation has become increasingly important. This study matters because social media is now a primary source of political information, especially among young people, but its impact may vary depending on whether individuals live in cities or villages. There is a gap in knowledge about how social media's influence differs across these settings, particularly in developing countries where digital divides remain significant. The researcher will start by reviewing existing literature on social media and political engagement, focusing on differences between urban and rural populations. The next step involves designing a cross-sectional survey, drawing a representative sample of approximately 400 residents—200 from urban areas and 200 from rural areas. Data collection will be through structured questionnaires that measure social media usage, types of political activities, and perceptions of influence. Additionally, in-depth interviews may be conducted with key informants to deepen understanding. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics to understand usage patterns, and inferential techniques such as t-tests or ANOVA to compare differences between urban and rural respondents. Regression analysis may be employed to identify the strength of social media’s influence on political activities across both groups. Expected findings include identifying specific ways social media encourages political engagement differently based on location, and understanding what factors enhance or hinder this influence. The study will contribute to scholarly knowledge by providing insights into the spatial dynamics of digital political participation, which could inform policymakers and civil society organizations in designing targeted communication strategies. Ultimately, the research anticipates that urban residents will show higher levels of political engagement linked to social media, but rural populations may demonstrate unique forms of engagement driven by community or local issues. Recommendations are likely to focus on bridging digital divides to foster inclusive political participation across all areas.
