Thesis Abstract

Urban green spaces (UGS) serve as vital components of sustainable urban development, contributing to environmental quality, public health, and social well-being. However, disparities in management strategies across different municipalities have resulted in varied environmental outcomes, prompting a critical need to evaluate the effectiveness of diverse approaches. This study aims to conduct a comprehensive comparative analysis of urban green space management strategies and their environmental outcomes in metropolitan areas, with the specific objectives of identifying prevalent management practices, assessing their ecological impacts, and determining the key factors influencing successful green space management. Employing a cross-sectional research design, the study was conducted within two major metropolitan cities known for contrasting green space policies City A and City B. The population comprised urban green space managers, policymakers, environmental scientists, and residents who interact with green spaces. A stratified random sampling technique was utilized to select 250 respondents—125 from each city—ensuring representation across different stakeholder groups. Data collection involved structured questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and field observations. The questionnaires assessed management practices, resource allocation, and perceptions of ecological health, while interviews provided in-depth insights into policy frameworks and operational challenges. Field observations evaluated vegetation diversity, soil quality, and biodiversity indicators, utilizing standardized ecological assessment protocols. To ensure validity and reliability, instruments were pre-tested with a pilot sample of 30 respondents, and Cronbach's alpha coefficients exceeded 0.8 across all scales. Quantitative data from questionnaires and ecological assessments were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and multiple regression analysis to explore the relationships between management strategies and environmental outcomes. The qualitative interview data were subjected to thematic analysis to elucidate contextual factors and stakeholder perspectives. An integrated analytical framework grounded in the Social-Ecological Systems (SES) theory and Adaptive Co-management theory was employed to interpret the findings, highlighting the complex interactions between management practices, ecological processes, and social factors. The expected findings indicate that management strategies emphasizing community participation, sustainable resource use, and adaptive management are significantly associated with improved ecological indicators, such as increased plant biodiversity, soil health, and reduced pollution levels. Conversely, strategies characterized by centralized control and minimal community engagement tend to correlate with suboptimal ecological outcomes. The study anticipates identifying key variables—including policy consistency, stakeholder involvement, and funding levels—that mediate these relationships. It is also projected that differences in institutional capacity and local ecological contexts influence the effectiveness of management approaches. This research contributes to knowledge by providing an empirically grounded comparative framework for evaluating UGS management practices and their ecological impacts in urban settings, incorporating insights from multiple stakeholder perspectives and ecological assessments. It advances theoretical understanding by integrating SES and adaptive management concepts into urban green space analysis, thereby enriching existing models of urban ecosystem governance. The findings will inform policymakers, urban planners, and environmental managers in devising context-specific, effective strategies for sustainable green space management. The study concludes that adopting participatory, adaptive, and resource-efficient management practices constitutes a viable pathway toward enhancing urban ecological health. Recommendations include fostering stakeholder engagement through community-based management schemes, establishing monitoring systems for ecological indicators, and aligning policies with local ecological and social contexts. Future research should explore longitudinal assessments of green space interventions and expand to include climate resilience considerations to better inform sustainable urban development strategies.
