This research project seeks to delve into the syntax of evidentiality in different languages, aiming to provide a comprehensive understanding of how languages grammatically encode the source of information and the speaker's epistemic stance.</div><div>Evidentiality plays a fundamental role in linguistic expression, reflecting the ways in which speakers convey the origin of their knowledge and the degree of certainty associated with their statements. By investigating the syntactic structures and markers used to express evidentiality across languages, this study aims to shed light on the cross-linguistic variation and universals in the grammaticalization of evidentiality.</div><div>Furthermore, the research project will provide a typological overview of evidentiality, examining the diverse ways in which languages grammatically encode evidentiality and the processes of grammaticalization involved. By exploring the relationship between evidentiality and epistemic modality, this study aims to provide insights into the complex interplay between evidentiality and the speaker's assessment of the information's source and reliability.</div><div>Moreover, the investigation will focus on the syntactic markers of evidentiality, differentiating between direct and indirect evidentiality and examining the syntactic structures used to express evidentiality in discourse. By analyzing the pragmatic functions of evidential markers and their role in shaping discourse coherence, this study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the syntactic manifestations of evidentiality in linguistic expression.</div><div>Additionally, the research project will address the impact of language contact on evidentiality, investigating the borrowing, adaptation, and contact-induced changes in evidential markers. By examining the implications of language contact on the grammaticalization and expression of evidentiality, this study aims to provide insights into the dynamic nature of evidentiality and its susceptibility to language change in multilingual contexts.</div><div>Ultimately, this research project seeks to contribute to our understanding of the syntax of evidentiality in different languages, offering implications for our knowledge of linguistic typology, cross-linguistic variation, and the grammaticalization of evidentiality.
