Thesis Abstract
ABSTRACT Language endangerment is a critical issue facing many languages around the world today. Nigeria, being a linguistically diverse country with over 500 languages, is not exempt from this phenomenon. This research project aims to assess the level of language endangerment in Nigeria by examining various factors that contribute to the decline of indigenous languages in the country. The study will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining both qualitative and quantitative research methods to gather comprehensive data on the status of endangered languages in Nigeria. Qualitative methods such as interviews, focus group discussions, and language documentation will be used to collect information from language speakers, linguists, and other relevant stakeholders. On the other hand, quantitative data will be obtained through surveys and statistical analysis of language vitality indicators. One of the key factors contributing to language endangerment in Nigeria is the dominance of major languages such as Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo, which are widely used in education, media, and government. As a result, many minority languages are marginalized and face the threat of extinction. Additionally, urbanization, globalization, and socio-economic factors play a significant role in the erosion of linguistic diversity in Nigeria. The findings of this research will shed light on the current status of endangered languages in Nigeria and provide valuable insights into the factors driving language endangerment in the country. By identifying the most vulnerable languages and understanding the challenges they face, this study aims to raise awareness about the importance of linguistic diversity and the need for language preservation efforts in Nigeria. Ultimately, the results of this research project will contribute to ongoing efforts to revitalize endangered languages in Nigeria and promote linguistic diversity and cultural heritage preservation. It is hoped that the findings will inform policymakers, educators, and language activists on strategies to support endangered languages and ensure their survival for future generations. In conclusion, this research project will provide a comprehensive assessment of the level of language endangerment in Nigeria, highlighting the key factors contributing to the decline of indigenous languages in the country. By examining the current status of endangered languages and identifying challenges and opportunities for language preservation, this study aims to contribute to the conservation and revitalization of linguistic diversity in Nigeria.
