This thesis investigates the phenomenon of code-switching in multilingual communities, aiming to explore the patterns, motivations, and implications of language alternation among speakers of multiple languages. Code-switching, the practice of switching between languages within a single conversation or discourse, is a complex linguistic phenomenon that reflects the sociolinguistic dynamics and cultural identities of individuals and communities. This research project employs a qualitative approach to analyze code-switching behaviors in multilingual settings, focusing on the factors influencing language choice, the structural patterns of code-switching, and the communicative functions served by code-switching practices. The study involves data collection through participant observation, interviews, and audio recordings of naturally occurring conversations in multilingual contexts. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the topic, presenting the background of the study, the problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, and the structure of the thesis. Chapter 2 offers a comprehensive literature review that examines existing research on code-switching, multilingualism, sociolinguistic theories, and previous studies on language alternation in diverse linguistic communities. Chapter 3 details the research methodology, including the research design, data collection methods, data analysis techniques, and ethical considerations. The findings of the study, discussed in Chapter 4, reveal various patterns of code-switching, such as intra-sentential and inter-sentential switches, tag-switching, and situational code-switching.
