In multilingual contexts, pragmatic competence—the ability to use language appropriately in interaction—varies across speakers and situations, influencing communicative success in academic, professional, and social domains. This study addresses the problem of how pragmatic competence is distributed across language repertoires and social contexts among multilingual speakers, and how it relates to proficiency, exposure, and sociolinguistic factors. The aim is to conduct a cross-sectional examination of pragmatic competence in multilingual settings to identify determinants, patterns, and implications for instruction and assessment. Specific objectives are (1) to compare pragmatic performance across three language groups (L1 Spanish, L2 English, and L3 French) within bilingual and trilingual cohorts; (2) to examine the influence of age of acquisition, language dominance, and amount of intercultural exposure on refusal strategies, directive acts, and face-saving practices; (3) to investigate contextual variation in pragmatic choices across formal, informal, and mediated communication channels; (4) to test the applicability of the Speech Act Theory and Politeness Theory in accounting for cross-language pragmatic transfer; and (5) to provide evidence-based recommendations for curriculum design and assessment of pragmatic competence in multilingual education. The study adopts a cross-sectional, mixed-methods design integrating quantitative and qualitative data to triangulate findings. The population comprises multilingual university students (N ? 360) enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs across three language groups L1 Spanish speakers with L2 English and L3 French proficiency, L1 English speakers with high L2 Spanish or French, and L1 French speakers with L2 English. Stratified random sampling yields a total of 120 participants per language-dominance group, balanced for gender and age (18–35 years). Data collection instruments include (a) a discourse-completion task (DCT) presenting 12 speech-act scenarios (requests, refusals, apologies, compliments) across three contexts (academic, workplace, social) and channels (face-to-face, online chat, and email); (b) a validated pragmatic-appropriateness rating scale completed by trained raters to assess appropriateness and politeness strategies; (c) a comprehensive questionnaire capturing demographics, language history, exposure, proficiency (via standardized tests and self-r assessments), and intercultural experience; (d) semi-structured interviews (n ? 30) to extract nuanced rationales behind pragmatic choices. Validity and reliability are established through pilot testing, inter-rater reliability (Cohen’s kappa ? .80), and Cronbach’s alpha for scales (? ? .85). Data analysis employs a sequential approach. Descriptive statistics summarize pragmatic performance by language group, proficiency, and context. Inferential analyses include multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) to detect group differences across speech acts and contexts, followed by multiple regression to identify predictors such as age of acquisition, dominance, and exposure. It is anticipated that formal contexts will elicit more conventional politeness strategies, whereas informal contexts will display greater flexibility and context-driven variation. Age of acquisition and immersion are predicted to correlate positively with pragmatic flexibility, moderated by sociocultural norms of each language group. The theoretical contribution lies in extending Speech Act Theory and Politeness Theory to account for cross-linguistic pragmatic transfer in multilingual populations, and in integrating pragmatic performance with sociolinguistic variables within a unified SEM framework. The study contributes to knowledge by providing empirical benchmarks for pragmatic competence across multilingual settings, informing assessment design and targeted instructional interventions in second/foreign language education, intercultural communication training, and professional communication programs. It offers evidence-based guidelines for classroom activities that cultivate context-sensitive pragmatic use and mitigates transfer-related misunderstandings in multilingual interactions. The main conclusion posits that pragmatic competence in multilingual settings emerges from dynamic interactions among proficiency, exposure, and sociocultural alignment, with implications for pedagogy and assessment. Recommendations include embedding pragmatic awareness modules in language curricula, developing context-rich assessment tasks, and fostering intercultural contact opportunities to enhance pragmatic adaptability across languages.
