Thesis Abstract
Special libraries in Nigeria face unique challenges in acquiring library materials and services for their users. This research project aims to explore and understand the difficulties that special libraries encounter in this aspect. The challenges include limited funding, inadequate collection development policies, lack of specialized librarians, and difficulties in sourcing relevant and up-to-date materials. Limited funding is a major obstacle for special libraries in Nigeria. Many of these libraries operate on tight budgets, which restrict their ability to purchase new materials and subscribe to essential services. This limitation hampers the acquisition of diverse and current resources needed to meet the information needs of users. Inadequate collection development policies also contribute to the challenges faced by special libraries in Nigeria. Without clear guidelines on how to build and maintain their collections, librarians may struggle to select appropriate materials that align with the library's objectives and user needs. This lack of direction can lead to a disjointed and inefficient acquisition process. Furthermore, the shortage of specialized librarians in special libraries poses a significant challenge. Librarians with subject expertise are essential for identifying relevant resources, evaluating collection needs, and providing specialized services to users. The absence of such professionals hinders the effective acquisition and delivery of library materials and services. Another critical issue is the difficulty in sourcing relevant and up-to-date materials for special libraries in Nigeria. Limited local publishing and distribution networks make it challenging to access a wide range of materials, especially those that are specialized or niche. Additionally, factors such as import restrictions, high costs, and bureaucratic hurdles further complicate the acquisition process for librarians. Addressing these challenges requires a multifaceted approach that involves improving funding opportunities for special libraries, developing robust collection development policies, investing in librarian training and professional development, and establishing efficient mechanisms for sourcing materials. By overcoming these obstacles, special libraries in Nigeria can enhance their ability to acquire and provide quality library materials and services that meet the diverse needs of their users efficiently.
