Thesis Abstract

Abstract
This research project aims to explore the use of programming as a strategy to attract students to the academic library. By offering a variety of engaging activities such as art exhibitions, book swaps, comfortable furniture, espresso bars, hosting campus meetings and conferences, lectures, and poetry readings, libraries can transform themselves into vibrant and dynamic spaces that appeal to the modern student. The traditional role of the library as a quiet and solitary study space is evolving, and libraries are increasingly seeking ways to draw in students who may not naturally gravitate towards these institutions. By curating a diverse range of programming, libraries can create a welcoming and inclusive environment that caters to the various interests and needs of students. Art exhibitions offer a visually stimulating experience that can spark creativity and inspiration among students. Book swaps provide an opportunity for students to engage with reading material outside of their academic requirements, fostering a love for reading and a sense of community among library users. Comfortable furniture and espresso bars create inviting spaces for students to relax, socialize, and work on projects in a comfortable setting. Hosting campus meetings and conferences in the library encourages student involvement in academic and extracurricular activities, reinforcing the library as a hub of campus life. Additionally, lectures and poetry readings provide intellectual stimulation and cultural enrichment, attracting students who are interested in expanding their knowledge and exploring new ideas. By incorporating these diverse programming initiatives, libraries can position themselves as more than just repositories of books and resources but as dynamic community spaces that support student engagement and wellbeing. This research project will investigate the impact of programming on student usage and perceptions of the library, shedding light on how libraries can adapt to meet the changing needs and expectations of today's students. Ultimately, the findings of this research project will contribute to a deeper understanding of how libraries can leverage programming to attract and retain students, enhancing their relevance and value in the academic community.
