This study investigated personnel motivation and job performance in public libraries in south-south, Nigeria. The research design adopted for the study was the descriptive survey. Six research questions and two hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Interview schedule was also used to elicit data for the study. The questions among other things sought answers to the nature of job performed in public library, available personnel motivation practice, extent personnel motivation practice affects job performance, problems associated with personnel motivation and job performance in libraries and strategies to enhance staff motivation and job performance. Hypotheses testing using t-test and ANOVA were also used to test the two hypotheses formulated for the study. A total of 107 personnel comprising of librarians and para-professional librarians in public libraries in south-south, Nigeria was used. A Questionnaire of 77 items was used for data collection. A total of 104 copies of the questionnaire was returned and analyzed using mean and standard deviation. In the final analysis, the result from the study amongst others shows that there is significant difference between the six states on the nature of job performed in the different state public libraries in south-south, Nigeria. While there is a significant difference between the extent of motivation and job performance of librarians and para-professional librarians in public libraries in south-south, Nigeria. The result of the study also reveals that motivation affects job performance to a high extent. The Findings reveals the major problems associated with personnel motivation and job performance to include; poor funding, insufficient staff strength and untrained staff. A good salary package, adequate funding, provision of ICT facilities staff development and training opportunities among others were strategies to enhance motivation and job performance of personnel in public libraries in South-South Nigeria. Recommendations were also made from the study such as management’s commitment to the provision of new innovative library services, provision of adequate motivation practice and adequate funding from government funding bodies.
