Thesis Abstract

The rapid expansion of digital information and the growing linguistic diversity of user communities have intensified the need for unified digital libraries that provide reliable multilingual access to scholarly resources, authoritative archives, and cultural heritage materials. However, existing systems often operate in silos, suffer from fragmented metadata, limited cross-language search capabilities, and inconsistent user interfaces, which collectively impede equitable access for multilingual user groups and constrain knowledge discovery. This study aims to design and evaluate a unified digital library (UDL) that delivers seamless multilingual access, advanced cross-language retrieval, and unified user experience across languages and modalities. The specific objectives are (1) to develop an architectural blueprint and metadata model that support multilingual indexing, translation-aware search, and cross-language relevance ranking; (2) to implement a prototype UDL integrating multilingual metadata standards, automated translation components, and federated search across heterogeneous repositories; (3) to evaluate the usability, retrieval effectiveness, and user satisfaction of the prototype across English, Spanish, Arabic, and Mandarin interfaces; (4) to examine the impact of the UDL on information-seeking efficiency and perceived inclusivity among diverse user groups; and (5) to formulate design guidelines and an implementation roadmap for scalable deployment in university and national library ecosystems. The study adopts a design?science research approach complemented by a mixed-methods evaluation. The research design comprises iterative design cycles (a) requirements elicitation with 60 participants including faculty, postgraduate students, and library staff across multilingual domains; (b) development of a modular prototype built on a layered architecture with a metadata-agnostic search layer, an ontology-driven cross-language translation module, and a unified user interface; (c) a formative usability test with 40 participants employing think-aloud protocols and task-based scenarios; and (d) a summative evaluation involving 120 participants conducting standardized search tasks across four languages. Data collection instruments include a standardized System Usability Scale (SUS), the Multilingual Information Retrieval Evaluation (MIRE) instrument to capture retrieval performance metrics, the Extension of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) questionnaire for perceived usefulness and ease of use, and interview guides for qualitative insights. It is anticipated that metadata interoperability and a robust translation-aware ranking algorithm will mitigate language barriers and enhance discoverability across English, Spanish, Arabic, and Mandarin corpora. The study expects to reveal critical trade-offs between translation quality and latency, and to identify user interface design patterns that promote intuitive cross-language search and filtering. The theoretical contribution lies in extending information retrieval theory to multilingual, cross-domain digital libraries by integrating translation studies, metadata interoperability, and user-centered design. The practical contribution encompasses a validated architectural blueprint, a reusable prototype, and a set of evidence-based guidelines for stakeholders pursuing scalable, multilingual library services in higher education and national information infrastructure settings. The study concludes that a thoughtfully designed UDL can substantially enhance equitable access to information, support inclusive scholarly communication, and foster broader participation in knowledge economies. Recommendations include adopting standardized multilingual metadata schemas, investing in language-aware ranking and translation quality assessment, implementing continuous user-centered evaluation processes, and pursuing phased deployment accompanied by performance monitoring and governance frameworks to sustain multilingual access initiatives across institutions.
