Thesis Abstract
Abstract
The management of academic libraries in Nigeria has witnessed significant transformations over the years, with the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) playing a crucial role in enhancing library operations and services. This research focuses on the application of ICT in Nigerian academic libraries and its impact on library management practices. The study examines the various ICT tools and technologies adopted by academic libraries in Nigeria, such as Integrated Library Systems (ILS), library automation software, digital libraries, and online databases. Through a comprehensive review of relevant literature, this research explores the benefits and challenges associated with the implementation of ICT in Nigerian academic libraries. The findings reveal that the adoption of ICT has led to improved efficiency in library operations, enhanced access to information resources, and better user services. Additionally, ICT has facilitated the preservation and dissemination of scholarly works, thereby supporting teaching, learning, and research activities in academic institutions. Despite the numerous advantages of ICT integration, the study also identifies several challenges faced by Nigerian academic libraries, including inadequate ICT infrastructure, limited funding, inadequate ICT skills among library staff, and issues related to digital preservation and copyright compliance. Addressing these challenges is essential to fully leverage the potential of ICT in enhancing library management practices and providing quality services to library users. Furthermore, the research highlights the need for continuous training and capacity building for library staff to improve their ICT skills and knowledge. Collaborative efforts among library consortia, government agencies, and other stakeholders are crucial in addressing the challenges faced by Nigerian academic libraries in implementing and sustaining ICT initiatives. By leveraging ICT tools and technologies effectively, academic libraries in Nigeria can enhance their resource management, streamline library processes, and provide innovative services to meet the evolving needs of users in the digital age. In conclusion, this research underscores the importance of ICT in the management of Nigerian academic libraries and emphasizes the potential for ICT to transform library services and operations. By overcoming the challenges and maximizing the benefits of ICT integration, academic libraries in Nigeria can play a pivotal role in supporting education, research, and knowledge dissemination in the academic community.
