Thesis Abstract

Amidst the complex geopolitical landscape of Southeast Asia, effective crisis management has increasingly depended on diplomatic strategies to prevent escalation and facilitate resolution of regional conflicts and disputes. This study investigates the specific impact of diplomatic engagement on crisis management outcomes within Southeast Asian nations, addressing the persistent challenge of managing transboundary tensions that threaten regional stability. The primary aim is to evaluate how diplomatic practices influence crisis resolution efficiency, focusing on electoral disputes, maritime conflicts, and environmental emergencies, which are prevalent in the region. The study's specific objectives include analyzing the role of diplomatic channels in crisis escalation or de-escalation, identifying the diplomatic approaches most effective in crisis mitigation, and assessing the influence of regional organizations such as ASEAN in facilitating diplomatic crisis resolution. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study combines quantitative analysis of crisis resolution case data with qualitative interviews to provide comprehensive insights. The quantitative component models data collected from 45 documented crisis incidents in Southeast Asia between 2010 and 2022, using logistic regression analysis to determine the significance of diplomatic variables in successful crisis resolution. The qualitative component involves semi-structured interviews with 30 regional policymakers, diplomats, and crisis responders to explore perceptions and practices governing diplomacy during crises. Data triangulation ensures robust findings, with validity enhanced through pilot testing of interview protocols and reliability established using Cronbach’s alpha for quantitative measures. The study hypothesizes that proactive diplomatic engagement positively correlates with successful crisis resolution (H1), and that regional organizations’ involvement enhances diplomatic effectiveness (H2). Anticipated findings suggest that diplomatic interventions, especially multilateral negotiations facilitated by ASEAN, significantly improve crisis outcomes, reducing the duration and intensity of disputes. It is expected that diplomatic communication channels, confidence-building measures, and third-party mediations are pivotal in crisis mitigation, with regional cooperation emerging as a critical factor. This research contributes to existing scholarship by empirically quantifying the impact of diplomacy on crisis management in Southeast Asia, filling an identified gap in the literature which often emphasizes military or economic aspects over diplomatic practices in regional crises. The findings aim to demonstrate the practical significance of diplomatic capital and multilateral diplomacy in sustaining regional stability, providing actionable insights for policymakers, regional organizations, and international mediators. Theoretically, the study applies the Cambridge Theory of Diplomatic Practice and the Theory of Conflict Transformation to interpret the dynamics observed. The main conclusion underscores that diplomacy, when strategically employed through regional platforms and multilateral negotiations, markedly enhances crisis management outcomes in Southeast Asia, advocating for increased investment in diplomatic capacity-building and regional cooperation mechanisms. Based on these conclusions, the study recommends strengthening regional diplomatic institutions, expanding mechanisms for early diplomatic engagement, and fostering trust and transparency among Southeast Asian states. The research further suggests avenues for future investigation, notably longitudinal studies to track the evolution of diplomatic effectiveness in crisis management and comparative analyses across different regional contexts. Overall, this study advances the understanding of diplomatic strategy as a crucial component of effective crisis management within a geopolitically sensitive and diverse region, emphasizing the role of regional diplomacy in fostering peace and stability in Southeast Asia.

Thesis Overview

This research explores how diplomacy influences the way Southeast Asian countries manage crises such as political conflicts, natural disasters, or security threats. The study focuses on understanding whether and how diplomatic efforts—such as negotiations, dialogues, treaties, and international partnerships—help countries respond more effectively to crises. This topic matters because Southeast Asia is a region often affected by various crises, and understanding the role of diplomacy can help improve collective responses and stability. The research addresses a knowledge gap regarding the specific impact of diplomatic practices on crisis outcomes in Southeast Asia, a region characterized by diverse political systems and active regional organizations. While previous studies have looked at crisis management generally, there is limited research focusing specifically on the contribution of diplomatic measures to successful crisis resolution in this context. The researcher will begin by reviewing existing literature on diplomacy, crisis management, and regional cooperation in Southeast Asia. Next, they will identify key diplomatic events and crisis cases, such as the ASEAN Response to regional security issues or natural disasters like typhoons. Data will be collected through interviews with diplomats, government officials, and regional organization representatives, complemented by analysis of official documents, treaties, and media reports. The analysis will use qualitative methods, particularly thematic analysis, to identify patterns and linkages between diplomatic actions and crisis outcomes. If appropriate, statistical techniques such as regression analysis may be used to explore relationships between diplomatic engagement levels and crisis resolution success. The expected contribution of this study is providing a clearer understanding of the specific role of diplomacy in crisis management, which can inform policymakers and regional organizations about effective diplomatic strategies. The main outcome will be recommendations on how diplomatic efforts can be strengthened to improve crisis responses. Overall, the study aims to demonstrate that diplomacy is a key tool for managing crises and promoting stability across Southeast Asia.
