Microinsurance offers a potential mechanism for expanding risk protection among low-income households, yet adoption patterns may vary significantly between urban and rural contexts due to differences in risk exposure, information channels, financial literacy, and access to distribution networks. This study addresses the problem of understanding how urban–rural disparities shape microinsurance adoption, aiming to inform policy design and program implementation that are sensitive to local dynamics. The objectives are (1) to quantify the prevalence of microinsurance adoption in urban and rural communities; (2) to identify socio-economic, informational, and institutional determinants of adoption in each setting; (3) to compare the relative influence of these determinants across urban and rural areas; (4) to examine the role of trust, perceived value, and risk perception in shaping decision-making; and (5) to develop a context-specific framework for enhancing adoption. A mixed-methods research design is employed. The quantitative component surveys a stratified random sample of 1,200 households (600 urban, 600 rural) within a metropolitan region and its surrounding hinterland, using a structured questionnaire administered by trained enumerators. The instrument captures demographic characteristics, income, consumption, risk exposure, prior claims experience, financial literacy, insurance awareness, and perceptions of microinsurance products. Descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and multivariate logistic regression are used to estimate determinants of adoption, with separate models for urban and rural subsamples to assess cross-context differences. However, rural contexts may exhibit selective adoption among households with social networks that facilitate information diffusion and microfinance linkages. The study anticipates identifying key determinants such as income level, household size, education, past loss experience, access to mobile money, proximity to service points, and trust in insurance providers, with differential weighting across contexts. The contribution to knowledge includes a comparative, evidence-based framework that integrates behavioral, institutional, and market factors shaping microinsurance adoption, and offers a validated model for predicting uptake at the community level. Policy implications include recommendations for targeted information campaigns, co-ordination with community-based organizations, tiered product design to reduce entry costs, and strengthening distribution channels in rural areas through digital and agent networks. The study concludes that place-based strategies are essential to enhance microinsurance adoption, with urban programs benefiting from mass-market outreach and digital platforms, while rural initiatives require trusted intermediaries, affordable micro-premiums, and simplified claim processes. Recommendations for practice emphasize collaboration among insurers, regulators, microfinance institutions, and local associations to tailor products and deployment strategies to contextual realities, along with ongoing monitoring of adoption patterns to adapt interventions over time.
