The persistent inefficiencies in small-scale automotive workshops hinder service quality, increase operational costs, and reduce competitiveness, necessitating the exploration of effective strategies to enhance operational performance. This study investigates the impact of lean manufacturing principles on the efficiency of small-scale automotive workshops, aiming to provide empirical evidence on the effectiveness of lean practices within this sector. The specific objectives include assessing current operational practices, identifying lean implementation levels, analyzing relationships between lean elements and workshop performance, and proposing a model for optimizing efficiency through lean integration. Employing a mixed-method research design, the study combines quantitative and qualitative approaches to capture a comprehensive understanding of lean implementation and its impacts. The population comprises 150 small-scale automotive workshops within the metropolitan region of a mid-sized city. A stratified random sampling technique was used to select 60 workshops, ensuring representation across different service specializations and operational sizes. Quantitative data were collected through structured questionnaires measuring lean practices, operational efficiency indicators, and customer satisfaction levels. Qualitative data were gathered via semi-structured interviews with workshop managers and observation checklists to validate the implementation of lean tools such as 5S, continuous flow, and waste reduction. The reliability and validity of the data collection instruments were established through Cronbach’s alpha coefficients exceeding 0.80 and expert reviews, respectively. It is anticipated that the findings will fill existing gaps in empirical research focusing specifically on small-scale automotive workshops, a sector less represented in lean manufacturing literature. This research contributes to the knowledge base by providing robust empirical evidence on the applicability and benefits of lean manufacturing in small-scale automotive contexts, thereby extending existing lean frameworks beyond large manufacturing or service industries. It offers a comprehensive model illustrating how lean practices influence operational metrics and customer satisfaction within this niche. Practitioners and policymakers can leverage the findings to develop targeted interventions aimed at lean technology transfer, staff training, and process optimization. The study concludes that systematic lean implementation significantly enhances operational efficiency in small-scale automotive workshops. Based on the findings, recommendations include the adoption of tailored lean tools, regular staff training programs, and establishment of benchmarking standards for performance monitoring. It also emphasizes the importance of management commitment and organizational culture in sustaining lean practices. Future research should explore longitudinal effects of lean adoption and investigate technological enablers that facilitate lean transformations in small-scale automotive environments, thereby broadening the generalizability and applicability of lean strategies within the sector.
