Abstract
The use of probiotics in managing gastrointestinal disorders, particularly in individuals with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), has been a topic of growing interest in the field of Human Nutrition and Dietetics. This thesis investigates the impact of probiotics on gut health in individuals diagnosed with IBS. The study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the efficacy of probiotics in alleviating IBS symptoms and improving overall gut health. The research methodology employed a systematic review approach to gather and analyze relevant literature on probiotics and their effects on gut health and IBS management. Ten items were identified from the literature that focused on the use of probiotics in individuals with IBS. The literature review revealed a variety of probiotic strains and formulations that have shown promising results in alleviating IBS symptoms, such as bloating, abdominal pain, and irregular bowel movements. The research methodology chapter outlines the approach taken to conduct the systematic review, including search strategies, inclusion criteria, and data extraction methods. The chapter also discusses the limitations of the study, such as potential biases in the selected literature and variations in probiotic formulations and dosages used across studies. The findings chapter presents a detailed discussion of the outcomes of the systematic review, highlighting the effectiveness of probiotics in improving gut health and managing symptoms of IBS. The discussion delves into the mechanisms of action of probiotics in the gut, such as modulation of the gut microbiota, enhancement of gut barrier function, and reduction of gut inflammation. In conclusion, this thesis contributes to the existing body of knowledge on the use of probiotics in individuals with IBS. Further research is needed to elucidate the optimal probiotic strains, dosages, and treatment durations for individuals with IBS.
