Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common gastrointestinal disorder characterized by chronic abdominal pain, bloating, and altered bowel habits. The gut microbiota has been implicated in the pathogenesis of IBS, with dysbiosis potentially playing a key role in symptom development. Probiotics, live microorganisms that confer health benefits to the host when administered in adequate amounts, have emerged as a potential therapeutic intervention for individuals with IBS. This study aims to investigate the impact of probiotics on gut health in individuals with IBS, focusing on symptom relief and modulation of the gut microbiota composition. The research will be conducted through a systematic review of the existing literature on probiotics and IBS, examining the mechanisms through which probiotics exert their effects on gut health. The literature review will encompass studies evaluating the efficacy of various probiotic strains in alleviating IBS symptoms, as well as their influence on gut microbiota diversity and composition. By synthesizing and analyzing the current body of evidence, this study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the role of probiotics in managing IBS. The methodology will involve a structured approach to data collection and analysis, including the selection of relevant studies, extraction of key findings, and synthesis of results. Various databases will be searched to identify relevant articles, and inclusion and exclusion criteria will be applied to ensure the quality and relevance of the studies included in the review. Data synthesis will involve a qualitative analysis of the findings, identifying patterns and trends in the literature related to probiotics and IBS. The results of this study will contribute to the existing knowledge on the use of probiotics in managing IBS, shedding light on the potential mechanisms of action and efficacy of probiotic interventions. The findings will have implications for clinical practice, guiding healthcare providers in the selection of appropriate probiotic strains for individuals with IBS. Moreover, the study will highlight gaps in the current literature and suggest areas for further research to enhance our understanding of the role of probiotics in promoting gut health in individuals with IBS. In conclusion, this thesis will provide valuable insights into the impact of probiotics on gut health in individuals with IBS, offering a comprehensive analysis of the current evidence and highlighting the potential benefits of probiotic interventions in managing this common gastrointestinal disorder. The findings of this study will inform clinical practice and contribute to the development of targeted probiotic therapies for individuals with IBS, ultimately improving the quality of life for these individuals.
