Thesis Abstract
Adolescents' nutritional behaviors significantly influence their immediate health outcomes and long-term lifestyle patterns, yet many remain inadequately informed or motivated to adopt healthy dietary practices due to culturally incongruent health education strategies. This study aims to design, implement, and evaluate a culturally tailored nutritional education program targeted at adolescents aged 13 to 18 years in urban settings, with specific objectives to assess baseline nutritional knowledge, develop culturally appropriate educational materials, evaluate the program’s effectiveness in improving nutritional knowledge and dietary behaviors, and explore participants’ perceptions of the intervention. Employing a quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test measures, the research was conducted among a sample of 300 adolescents selected through a multistage random sampling technique from two secondary schools. The study utilized structured questionnaires to assess nutritional knowledge, dietary intake, and attitudes, alongside focus group discussions to gather qualitative insights. The reliability and validity of quantitative instruments were established through Cronbach’s alpha coefficients exceeding 0.80, and thematic analysis was employed to analyze qualitative data, whereas paired t-tests and multiple regression analyses were performed on quantitative data to evaluate changes over time and identify predictors of dietary behavior change. It is anticipated that the culturally tailored intervention will significantly enhance adolescents’ nutritional knowledge, positively influence their dietary choices, and bolster their readiness to modify unhealthy eating habits. The study expects to uncover critical cultural factors affecting dietary behaviors and demonstrate the importance of context-specific health education. The findings will contribute to existing literature by providing empirical evidence on the effectiveness of culturally adapted nutrition education models in adolescent populations, thereby filling a notable gap in culturally sensitive health promotion strategies within educational settings.
