Thesis Abstract

The rapid proliferation of mobile money services has significantly transformed financial access in rural communities, addressing long-standing barriers to formal banking and promoting economic inclusivity. Despite its growing adoption, limited comprehensive assessments exist on the extent to which mobile money influences rural livelihoods, income diversification, savings behavior, and overall economic well-being. This study aims to evaluate the socio-economic impacts of mobile money on rural households, with specific objectives to ascertain the effect of mobile money usage on income levels, examine its role in facilitating access to credit and savings, and identify factors influencing adoption and sustained usage among rural populations. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study combines quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to obtain a comprehensive understanding of mobile money's impact. The target population comprises rural households across three districts with high mobile money penetration, with a total sampling frame of approximately 20,000 households. A stratified random sampling technique is used to select 600 households to ensure representativeness across varying socio-economic statuses and geographic locations. Data collection is conducted through structured questionnaires, focus group discussions, and key informant interviews, leveraging validated instruments adapted from prior studies on financial inclusion and ICT adoption. The instruments’ validity and reliability are established through pilot testing and Cronbach’s alpha analysis, achieving coefficients above 0.8. Data are analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple regression models to examine relationships between mobile money usage and socio-economic indicators. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) is employed to explore the causal pathways and mediating factors influencing financial behaviors and livelihoods. The theoretical framework integrates the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the Diffusion of Innovations Theory, underpinning the analysis of adoption patterns and sustained usage dynamics within rural contexts. It is anticipated that mobile money usage significantly correlates with increased household income, enhanced savings, and access to credit, thereby improving overall livelihood resilience. The findings are expected to reveal key factors affecting adoption, such as digital literacy, trust in technology, and network accessibility, influencing the extent of economic benefits realized by households. Moreover, the study anticipates identifying barriers to wider adoption and sustained use, including infrastructural constraints and socio-cultural factors. This research contributes to the body of knowledge by providing empirically grounded insights into the socio-economic impacts of mobile money within rural settings in a developing country context, filling existing gaps regarding its long-term effects on livelihoods and financial inclusion. It advances theoretical understanding by integrating TAM and Diffusion of Innovations within a rural financial inclusion framework, offering a nuanced perspective on technology adoption processes in underserved communities. The main conclusions highlight that mobile money services have the potential to substantially enhance rural economic outcomes, provided that barriers to adoption are addressed through targeted policy interventions. Recommendations include scaling digital literacy programs, improving network infrastructure, and developing durable trust-building measures to foster sustained use. The study also advocates for policymakers and financial service providers to tailor mobile money frameworks that consider rural-specific challenges, thereby amplifying its positive impacts on livelihoods and ensuring inclusive economic growth. Future research directions suggest longitudinal studies to evaluate long-term effects and comparative analyses across different regions to generalize findings across diverse rural contexts.

The research process involves collecting primary data through surveys and interviews with a sample of approximately 300 rural residents who use mobile money, as well as key stakeholders such as mobile money agents and local business owners. The researcher will use structured questionnaires to gather quantitative data on income levels, savings, and economic activities, and conduct qualitative interviews to understand users' experiences and challenges. Data analysis will include descriptive statistics to summarize typical usage patterns, regression analysis to determine the impact of mobile money on income and economic participation, and thematic analysis for qualitative insights. The expected contribution of this study is to provide clear evidence of mobile money’s role in advancing economic inclusion and to identify factors that enhance or hinder its positive effects. From the findings, the researcher hopes to suggest practical recommendations for improving mobile financial services in rural areas. The outcome should help inform strategies for governments and organizations to maximize the social and economic benefits of mobile money, ultimately contributing to poverty reduction and sustainable development.
