Thesis Abstract

The pre-colonial era in Nigeria saw intricate and multifaceted relations among the Yoruba people that significantly impacted international relations within the region. This research delves into the dynamics of these pre-colonial relations among the Yorubas in Nigeria and their implications for international relations. The Yoruba people, one of the largest ethnic groups in Nigeria, had a well-developed social structure and political organization before the colonial era. Their society was characterized by city-states, each with its own ruler and system of governance. Interactions among these city-states were essential for trade, diplomacy, and mutual defense. These relations were based on complex networks of alliances, rivalries, and economic ties. Trade played a crucial role in the pre-colonial relations among the Yorubas. The region was known for its production of goods such as textiles, beads, and brass works, which were highly valued in both regional and trans-Saharan trade networks. The Yoruba city-states engaged in extensive commercial activities, exchanging goods with neighboring societies and even with European traders along the coast. Diplomacy was another key aspect of Yoruba international relations. City-states often formed alliances through intermarriages, treaties, and political agreements. These alliances were crucial for maintaining stability and security in the region. Conflicts between city-states were not uncommon, but there were also mechanisms in place for resolving disputes through negotiation and mediation. Religion and culture also played a significant role in Yoruba international relations. The Yoruba people shared a common cultural heritage, including language, art, and religious beliefs. This shared identity helped foster a sense of unity among the various city-states and facilitated communication and cooperation. The pre-colonial relations among the Yorubas had far-reaching implications for international relations in the region. The stability and prosperity of the Yoruba city-states attracted traders and visitors from neighboring regions, leading to cultural exchanges and the spread of Yoruba influence. These relations also influenced the balance of power among different ethnic groups and societies in Nigeria. In conclusion, the pre-colonial relations among the Yorubas in Nigeria were characterized by trade, diplomacy, and cultural exchanges that shaped international relations in the region. Understanding these dynamics is essential for comprehending the historical roots of contemporary international relations in Nigeria and the broader West African region.
