Thesis Abstract

Post-conflict societies often experience significant loss of cultural heritage due to violence, neglect, and infrastructural breakdown, which hampers national identity reconstruction and historical continuity. This study addresses the urgent need for effective digital archiving solutions to preserve at-risk cultural assets, leveraging Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to facilitate sustainable heritage management. The primary aim is to assess the effectiveness of digital archiving initiatives in safeguarding cultural heritage within post-conflict environments, with specific objectives including evaluating current digital archiving practices, identifying barriers to their implementation, and proposing an optimized framework for heritage preservation. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study combines qualitative and quantitative approaches to generate comprehensive insights. The target population comprises cultural heritage professionals, digital archivists, policymakers, and community stakeholders in three post-conflict regions—specifically, a total population of approximately 150 key informants. A purposive sampling technique selects 60 experts for in-depth interviews and focus group discussions, while a stratified random sampling method is used to distribute survey questionnaires to 200 registered cultural practitioners and archivists across the regions to ensure representative data collection. Data collection instruments include semi-structured interview guides, structured questionnaires, and documentary review protocols, with validity confirmed through expert panel validation and reliability assessed via Cronbach’s alpha coefficients exceeding 0.85. Data analysis employs thematic analysis for qualitative data, following Braun and Clarke’s framework, to identify recurring patterns concerning digital archiving challenges and opportunities. Quantitative data are analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis to investigate relationships between variables such as technological capacity, policy environment, and heritage preservation outcomes. Additionally, Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) tests the proposed conceptual framework grounded in the Technological Acceptance Model (TAM), adapted to the heritage context, and the Cultural Heritage Preservation Theory to explore how technological adoption influences preservation efficacy. The anticipated findings suggest that digital archiving practices significantly enhance the preservation of cultural artifacts by increasing accessibility, reducing physical deterioration risks, and promoting community engagement. However, challenges such as infrastructural deficits, limited technical expertise, and inadequate policy support remain pervasive. The study expects to identify a positive correlation between technological readiness and preservation success, moderated by institutional support and community participation. It is further predicted that adoption of a standardized digital archiving framework—integrating open-source platforms, capacity-building initiatives, and policy reforms—will substantially improve heritage preservation outcomes. This research contributes to theoretical knowledge by bridging digital technology adoption models with cultural heritage preservation theories, providing a nuanced understanding of how ICT-driven solutions can be optimized in fragile socio-political contexts. Practically, it offers a validated framework for policymakers, heritage managers, and technologists aimed at developing resilient digital archives tailored to the needs of post-conflict societies. The main conclusion advocates for integrated, context-sensitive digital archiving strategies as essential tools for cultural resilience, emphasizing capacity development, infrastructural investment, and policy reforms. Recommendations include establishing national digital heritage frameworks, fostering international collaboration, and promoting community-inclusive digitization projects. The study also underscores the importance of ongoing research to refine digital preservation practices amid evolving technological landscapes and socio-political dynamics, thereby ensuring the long-term safeguarding of cultural identities in post-conflict settings.
