Thesis Abstract

This study examines the influence of family background on the academic achievement of senior secondary school students in the Nsukka Educational Zone of Enugu State. The research aims to investigate how various aspects of family background, such as parental education level, socio-economic status, family structure, and parental involvement, impact students' academic performance. A mixed-methods approach will be employed to gather data for this research. Quantitative data will be collected through surveys distributed to senior secondary school students in the Nsukka Educational Zone. The surveys will include questions about parental education level, socio-economic status, family structure, and perceptions of parental involvement in their education. Academic achievement data, such as grades and exam scores, will also be collected from school records. Qualitative data will be collected through interviews with students, parents, teachers, and school administrators. These interviews will provide a deeper understanding of how family background influences academic achievement from the perspectives of different stakeholders. The data collected will be analyzed using statistical methods to identify any significant relationships between family background variables and academic achievement. Thematic analysis will be used to analyze the qualitative data from the interviews. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the existing body of knowledge on the role of family background in shaping students' academic outcomes. By understanding how factors such as parental education level, socio-economic status, family structure, and parental involvement impact academic achievement, educators and policymakers can develop targeted interventions to support students from diverse family backgrounds. Ultimately, this research aims to provide insights that can help improve educational outcomes for senior secondary school students in the Nsukka Educational Zone and beyond. By recognizing and addressing the influence of family background on academic achievement, schools and policymakers can work towards creating a more equitable and supportive educational environment for all students.
