Thesis Abstract

The rising prevalence of sedentary lifestyles among employees in corporate settings has intensified the need to evaluate workplace wellness initiatives aimed at promoting physical activity. This study investigates the impact of structured workplace wellness programs on employee physical activity levels within a large multinational corporation operating in the healthcare industry. The primary aim is to determine the extent to which wellness interventions influence employees' physical activity behaviors, thereby contributing to improved health outcomes and organizational productivity. To achieve this, the study articulates specific objectives assessing the participation rate in wellness programs, identifying factors facilitating or inhibiting employee engagement, and evaluating the change in physical activity levels pre- and post-intervention. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study integrates quantitative and qualitative approaches to provide a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon. The quantitative component involves a longitudinal quasi-experimental design, with a sample of 400 employees randomly selected through stratified sampling to ensure representation across departments. Data collection instruments include a validated self-reported Physical Activity Questionnaire (PAQ) and organizational records of program participation. The qualitative component comprises focus group discussions with 30 employees and 10 HR managers, aimed at exploring perceptions and attitudes concerning the wellness initiatives. Data analysis entails descriptive statistics, paired t-tests to compare pre- and post-intervention physical activity levels, and multiple regression analysis utilizing the Theory of Planned Behavior (Ajzen, 1991) as the theoretical framework to identify predictors of physical activity engagement. Thematic analysis is applied to qualitative data to elucidate contextual factors influencing employee participation. Expected findings indicate a statistically significant increase in physical activity levels among employees involved in the wellness program, with participation rates positively associated with perceived behavioral control, social support, and organizational encouragement. Factors such as time constraints, perceived program relevance, and management support are anticipated to emerge as key facilitators or barriers. The study hypothesizes that employees with higher self-efficacy and stronger organizational support will demonstrate greater improvements in physical activity engagement post-intervention. The findings aim to delineate the specific components of wellness programs that effectively foster sustained physical activity behaviors among employees. This research contributes to the existing body of knowledge by providing empirical evidence on the efficacy of workplace wellness programs within a corporate context, extending the understanding of behavioral determinants underpinning employee physical activity. It enhances theoretical models, such as the Theory of Planned Behavior, by contextualizing them within organizational settings and emphasizing the role of organizational culture and policy in shaping health behaviors. The study also offers practical insights for organizations seeking to design and implement effective wellness initiatives tailored to employee needs and organizational goals. The study concludes that comprehensive wellness programs are instrumental in promoting physical activity, with tangible benefits for employee health and organizational productivity. Recommendations include increasing managerial engagement, integrating personalized health components, and creating an organizational culture that values employee well-being. Further research should explore longitudinal effects over extended periods and examine the impact across diverse industry sectors. By elucidating mechanisms through which wellness initiatives influence employee behaviors, the study aims to inform policy development and shape sustainable health promotion strategies within corporate environments.

Thesis Overview

This research aims to understand how workplace wellness programs influence employees’ physical activity levels within a corporate environment. Workplace wellness programs are initiatives implemented by companies to promote healthier lifestyles among their employees, often including activities such as exercise classes, fitness challenges, and health education sessions. The importance of this study lies in addressing the growing concern of sedentary lifestyles in office-based jobs, which contribute to health issues like obesity, cardiovascular disease, and decreased productivity. Despite the widespread adoption of wellness programs, there is limited detailed knowledge about their actual effectiveness in increasing physical activity among employees, especially within specific corporate settings. The study seeks to fill this gap by systematically examining whether participation in wellness programs leads to measurable increases in employees’ physical activity. The researcher will conduct this study in a large corporate organization with at least 200 employees participating in wellness initiatives. The methodology involves a mixed-methods approach: quantitative data will be gathered through surveys measuring self-reported physical activity levels and attendance records of wellness activities, while qualitative data will be collected via focus group discussions to explore employees’ perceptions of the programs’ usefulness. Data analysis will involve descriptive statistics to summarize participant responses, t-tests or ANOVA to identify differences in physical activity levels before and after the program, and thematic analysis to interpret qualitative feedback. The researcher aims to determine whether there is a statistically significant increase in physical activity attributable to participation in the wellness programs and to explore factors influencing their effectiveness. The contribution of this research is to provide evidence-based insights into what makes workplace wellness programs successful or ineffective in promoting physical activity. It will help organizations refine their strategies to improve employee health outcomes. The expected outcome is a clearer understanding of the relationship between wellness initiatives and physical activity, which can inform future policies and interventions aimed at improving employee well-being and productivity.
