Thesis Abstract

This study investigates how school-based physical activity (PA) influences academic achievement and mental health outcomes among middle to high school students in an urban educational district. The problem addressed is the inconsistent integration of PA within school timetables and its potential trade-offs with academic instruction, despite evidence suggesting benefits for cognitive function and well-being. The aim is to quantify the relationship between daily PA and standardized test performance, attendance, and mental health indicators, while examining potential mediators such as sleep quality and self-regulation. Specific objectives are (1) to determine the association between frequency and intensity of school-based PA and academic performance in mathematics and language arts; (2) to assess the impact of PA on mental health outcomes including depressive symptoms, anxiety, and perceived stress; (3) to evaluate the mediating roles of sleep duration, executive function, and self-regulatory strategies; and (4) to explore potential moderating effects of gender, socioeconomic status, and baseline fitness levels. The study adopts a mixed-methods, sequential explanatory design. In the quantitative phase, a cohort of 1,200 students aged 12–16 from 12 secondary schools will be followed for two academic years. Data collection will include objective PA measures using ActiGraph accelerometers worn for seven consecutive days each term, academic achievement scores from standardized tests and course grades, and mental health inventories including the Child Depression Inventory, the Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children, and the Perceived Stress Scale. Sleep quality will be assessed with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, while executive function will be evaluated via the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function and a brief computerized Stroop task. A multi-level linear regression framework will assess associations between PA metrics (frequency, duration, intensity) and academic outcomes, controlling for baseline achievement, socioeconomic indicators, nutrition, and school-level clustering. Mediation analyses will test sleep, self-regulation, and executive function as mechanisms linking PA to outcomes. In the qualitative phase, a purposive subsample of 60 students and 24 teachers will participate in semi-structured interviews and focus groups to elucidate perceived barriers, motivators, and contextual factors influencing PA engagement and its perceived impact on learning and well-being. Thematic analysis will be guided by self-determination theory to interpret motivational processes. The study hypothesizes that higher levels of school-based PA are positively associated with academic performance and inversely related to depressive symptoms, anxiety, and perceived stress. It anticipates that improvements in sleep quality and executive function will mediate the PA–academic and PA–mental health relationships, with stronger effects observed in students from higher socioeconomic backgrounds and among those with initially lower fitness levels. Expected findings include (a) statistically significant positive associations between moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) minutes per day and standardized test scores; (b) reductions in internalizing symptoms corresponding with increased PA, particularly when PA is closely integrated into the school day; (c) evidence of partial mediation by sleep quality and executive function, and moderation by gender and SES. The study’s contribution to knowledge lies in providing robust, longitudinal evidence on the mechanisms through which school-based PA affects cognitive and affective outcomes, informing policy on optimal PA Dosage, scheduling, and program design within secondary education. Expected practical implications include recommendations for school timetabling to maximize cognitive load distribution, structured PA breaks embedded in instructional time, and targeted interventions for populations at risk of poorer mental health outcomes. The study will also offer a validated analytic model for assessing PA–outcome relationships in educational settings, with transferable implications for policymakers, school administrators, and educators seeking to optimize student health and learning. In conclusion, the research is anticipated to demonstrate that well-integrated school-based PA yields measurable benefits for both academic performance and mental health, with mediating roles of sleep and executive function, and with implications for equitable, scalable school health strategies. Recommendations include adopting structured MVPA opportunities totaling 60 minutes per school day, ensuring gender- and SES-sensitive delivery, and integrating PA with cognitive skill development activities to maximize educational gains.
