ABSTRACT
Evaluation of cardiopulmonary variables on hearing impaired students is vital because it helps in knowing how their lungs function and to be able to carry out daily activities without any difficulty. Students with hearing impairment are disadvantaged if they don‘t possess adequate cardiopulmonary function because it may complicate their impairment or lead to greater problem. This study therefore, focused on the evaluation of selected cardiopulmonary variables of secondary school students with hearing impairment.Quasi experimental research design was adopted. 24 students with hearing impairment were used for the experiment. They were recruited purposively by the researcher and this group of individuals served as volunteers for this study. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 8 students from SS1, SS2, and SS3 to make a total of 24 students. Data collected was analysed using descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation and inferential statistics of Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient and independent t-test at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The study showed that there was no significant relationship between blood pressure, resting heart rate and inspiratory capacity of secondary school students with hearing impairment and selected standard norm. For blood pressure and norm (r=.261, N=24, P>.05), for resting heart rate and norm (r=.037, N=24, P>.05) and for inspiratory capacity and norm (r=.021, N=24, P>.05). Also for hypotheses 5, there was no significantdifference in the gender of secondary school students with hearing impairment across the variables of BP and VO2 max.It is therefore recommended that there should be regular evaluation of selected cardiopulmonary variables on students with hearing impairment at the secondary school level which should be carried out with the help of professionals, and Institutions for students with hearing impairment should be encouraged to design simple aerobic exercises for students with hearing impairment during leisure time.
