Thesis Abstract

Abstract

Regular physical activity is essential for maintaining physical and mental well-being, especially among older adults. However, adherence to physical activity programs and sustaining an active lifestyle often becomes challenging as individuals age. This study aims to develop and evaluate strategies to promote lifelong physical activity adherence among older adults.

The research will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data from surveys and physical activity tracking devices with qualitative data from focus groups and interviews. The study will explore the motivations, barriers, and preferences of older adults regarding physical activity, as well as investigate the effectiveness of various intervention strategies, such as goal-setting, social support, and tailored exercise programs.

The findings of this research will contribute to the understanding of the factors influencing physical activity adherence among older adults and inform the development of effective strategies and programs to promote and sustain an active lifestyle in this population.

Thesis Overview

Chapter 1: Introduction

Background

Regular physical activity is crucial for maintaining physical and mental well-being, particularly among older adults. Engaging in regular exercise has been associated with numerous benefits for older individuals, including improved cardiovascular health, increased muscle strength and balance, better cognitive function, and reduced risk of chronic diseases1. Despite these well-documented advantages, many older adults struggle to adhere to physical activity programs and maintain an active lifestyle over the long term.

Adherence to physical activity can be influenced by various factors, such as individual motivations, social support, environmental barriers, and the design and delivery of exercise programs2. Developing effective strategies to promote and sustain physical activity adherence among older adults is essential to ensure they can reap the benefits of an active lifestyle throughout their later years.

Significance of the Study This study aims to contribute to the development of effective strategies to promote lifelong physical activity adherence among older adults. By exploring the motivations, barriers, and preferences of this population, as well as evaluating the effectiveness of various intervention strategies, the research will provide valuable insights into tailoring physical activity programs and support systems to meet the unique needs and circumstances of older individuals.

The findings of this study have the potential to inform the design and implementation of community-based programs, healthcare initiatives, and public policies aimed at promoting and sustaining physical activity among older adults. By identifying effective strategies and best practices, healthcare professionals, fitness instructors, and policymakers can develop interventions and create supportive environments that encourage lifelong physical activity adherence in this population.

Research Objectives The primary objectives of this study are:

To explore the motivations, barriers, and preferences of older adults regarding physical activity and adherence to exercise programs.

To evaluate the effectiveness of various intervention strategies, such as goal-setting, social support, and tailored exercise programs, in promoting physical activity adherence among older adults.

To investigate the role of environmental factors, social support systems, and community resources in facilitating or hindering physical activity adherence among older adults.

To develop evidence-based recommendations and strategies for promoting lifelong physical activity adherence among older adults in community and healthcare settings.

By addressing these objectives, the study will provide valuable insights into the factors influencing physical activity adherence among older adults and contribute to the development of effective strategies and programs to promote and sustain an active lifestyle in this population.

Footnotes

Warburton, D.
