Thesis Abstract
The increasing prevalence of sedentary lifestyles among adolescents poses significant public health challenges, including rising rates of obesity, cardiovascular risk factors, and mental health issues, necessitating urgent and context-specific intervention strategies. This study aims to design, implement, and evaluate a community-based physical activity program tailored to improve adolescent health outcomes within urban settings. The specific objectives are to assess the baseline physical activity levels and health status of adolescents, develop culturally appropriate intervention components, evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention in increasing physical activity engagement, and determine its impact on selected health indicators such as body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, and self-reported mental well-being. Employing a quasi-experimental research design with pre-test and post-test control groups, the study targeted adolescents aged 13 to 17 years residing in three urban communities. A total of 300 adolescents was purposively sampled, with 150 assigned to the intervention group and 150 to the control group through stratified random sampling based on gender and socio-economic status. Data collection instruments included a validated Physical Activity Questionnaire (PAQ), health assessment protocols for measuring BMI and blood pressure, and a standardized adolescent mental health questionnaire. The validity and reliability of the instruments were established through pilot testing and statistical analysis, including Cronbach’s alpha and factor analysis. The intervention comprised thrice-weekly supervised physical activity sessions incorporating sports, aerobic exercises, and lifestyle education, led by trained community health workers over a period of six months.
