Thesis Abstract

The integration of students with disabilities into mainstream physical education (PE) classes remains a significant challenge, driven by persistent barriers related to instructional strategies, resource allocation, and perceptions of inclusivity. This study addresses the urgent need for a comprehensive theoretical and practical framework that can effectively promote inclusive PE environments tailored to the diverse needs of students with disabilities. The primary aim is to develop, validate, and empirically test a framework that guides educators, policymakers, and stakeholders in implementing inclusive physical education practices. This overarching goal is achieved through three specific objectives (1) to identify key components and best practices that facilitate inclusion in PE, (2) to examine the underlying factors influencing effective implementation of inclusive PE strategies, and (3) to formulate and empirically validate a conceptual framework grounded in relevant educational and inclusion theories. The research adopts a sequential exploratory mixed-methods design, beginning with qualitative data collection to explore perceived barriers, facilitators, and contextual factors influencing inclusive PE, followed by quantitative validation of the proposed framework. The qualitative phase involves semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions with a purposive sample of 30 PE teachers, 15 school administrators, and 20 students with disabilities across 10 secondary schools. Data are analyzed thematically using NVivo software, guided by the Social Model of Disability and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) as theoretical anchors, to identify recurrent themes and inform framework development. The findings from this phase are used to construct a preliminary model, which is subsequently tested quantitatively through a survey administered to a larger sample of 250 PE teachers selected via stratified random sampling from national educational districts. Data from this survey are analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM) using AMOS, to assess the validity, reliability, and predictive capacity of the framework. Expected results include the identification of critical curriculum modifications, teacher competencies, resource needs, and policy support mechanisms necessary for fostering inclusive PE. The study anticipates demonstrating a statistically significant relationship between the implementation of identified framework components and positive inclusion outcomes, such as increased participation, motivation, and skill development among students with disabilities. The developed framework is expected to offer a practical, evidence-based model that integrates educational theories with contextual realities, providing a basis for systematic improvement of inclusive PE practices. Its validation will contribute new empirical insights into the mechanisms that underpin successful inclusion efforts in physical education settings. Theoretically, the study advances knowledge by synthesizing the Social Model of Disability, Universal Design for Learning, and Theory of Planned Behavior into an integrated framework for inclusive PE. Practically, it offers a tool for educators and policymakers to design, execute, and evaluate inclusion strategies more effectively. The findings are expected to fill existing gaps in the literature concerning contextualized frameworks and practical guidelines for inclusive physical education, especially in resource-constrained environments. The study concludes with specific recommendations for policy reforms, teacher training programs, curriculum development, and resource allocation to sustain and scale inclusive PE initiatives. It advocates for ongoing stakeholder engagement and capacity-building to ensure the adaptability and sustainability of the proposed framework. Finally, recommendations for further research include longitudinal studies to assess the long-term impact of framework implementation on student outcomes and the exploration of inclusive PE practices within diverse cultural and socio-economic contexts.

A sample of 150 teachers and 50 students from diverse schools will be selected using stratified random sampling to ensure varied perspectives. Quantitative data from surveys will be analysed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis to identify factors that significantly influence successful inclusion. Qualitative data from interviews will be examined through thematic analysis to gain deeper insights into personal experiences and contextual challenges. The expected contribution of this study is the development of an evidence-based framework, incorporating best practices, strategies, and resources, that can be adopted by schools to foster inclusive PE environments. The findings will guide policy makers, educators, and support staff on effective methods of adapting PE activities for students with different disabilities. The main outcome of the research will be a comprehensive, practical framework that enhances understanding and implementation of inclusive PE. The study anticipates that this framework will improve participation, satisfaction, and overall physical development of students with disabilities, ultimately promoting a more equitable and supportive school climate for all learners.
