Thesis Abstract
University students frequently experience high levels of academic stress which can adversely affect their mental health, academic performance, and overall well-being. Despite the growing recognition of peer counseling as a potential intervention, empirical evidence assessing its effectiveness specifically for reducing academic stress remains limited, particularly within the context of university environments. This study aims to evaluate the impact of peer counseling on alleviating academic stress among university students, with the specific objectives of determining the extent of stress reduction attributable to peer counseling, identifying students’ perceptions of peer counseling effectiveness, and examining the moderating role of demographic variables such as gender and academic year. The research adopts a mixed-methods, quasi-experimental design, comprising a quantitative component employing a pretest-posttest control group approach, and a qualitative component involving focus group discussions. The target population includes undergraduate students enrolled at a comprehensive university, with a total population of approximately 25,000 students. A stratified random sampling technique selected a sample of 400 students, divided equally into experimental and control groups. The experimental group participated in structured peer counseling sessions over a period of three months, facilitated by trained peer counselors, while the control group received no interventions. Quantitative data were collected using a standardized Academic Stress Scale (ASS) and a Peer Counselor Effectiveness Questionnaire (PCEQ). The study recommends the expansion of peer counseling schemes, training for peer counselors, and further research into long-term effects and scalability across diverse university settings. In conclusion, the research is expected to underscore peer counseling as a viable intervention for reducing academic stress, thereby enhancing student well-being and academic success. It advocates for institutional recognition of peer counseling programs as integral components of comprehensive mental health support systems in universities, emphasizing continual evaluation and adaptation to meet evolving student needs.
