Thesis Abstract

Abstract

Career indecision is a prevalent issue among college students, often leading to delays in graduation, increased anxiety, and suboptimal career choices. Career counseling programs have been implemented in many institutions to assist students in making informed career decisions. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of such programs in facilitating career decision-making among college students. A mixed-methods approach will be employed, combining quantitative measures of career decision-making self-efficacy and qualitative interviews to gain a comprehensive understanding of the impact of career counseling programs. The findings of this study will contribute to the existing literature on career development interventions and inform the design and implementation of effective career counseling programs tailored to the needs of college students.

Thesis Overview

Chapter 1: Introduction

Career decision-making is a critical process that many college students face as they navigate their academic and professional journeys. The transition from higher education to the workforce can be overwhelming, and students often struggle with choosing a career path that aligns with their interests, values, and abilities. Career indecision can lead to various negative consequences, including delayed graduation, increased anxiety and stress, and suboptimal career choices that may result in dissatisfaction and poor job performance.

To address this issue, many colleges and universities have implemented career counseling programs designed to assist students in exploring their career options, identifying their strengths and weaknesses, and developing effective decision-making strategies. These programs typically involve individual counseling sessions, group workshops, assessments, and access to career resources and information.

While the importance of career counseling programs is widely recognized, there is a need to evaluate their effectiveness in facilitating career decision-making among college students. Previous research has yielded mixed results, with some studies suggesting positive outcomes while others report limited impact. Additionally, the majority of existing studies have focused on quantitative measures of career decision-making, overlooking the subjective experiences and perspectives of students who have participated in these programs.

This study aims to contribute to the existing literature by conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the effectiveness of career counseling programs in facilitating career decision-making among college students. Specifically, the research objectives are:

To assess the impact of career counseling programs on students' career decision-making self-efficacy, which is a crucial determinant of effective career decision-making.

To explore the subjective experiences and perspectives of students who have participated in career counseling programs, gaining insights into the strengths, weaknesses, and potential areas for improvement.

To identify key factors that contribute to the success or failure of career counseling programs in facilitating career decision-making among college students.

By addressing these objectives, the study will provide valuable insights for higher education institutions, career counselors, and policymakers, enabling them to develop and implement more effective career counseling programs tailored to the specific needs of college students.

In the subsequent chapters, a comprehensive review of the relevant literature will be presented, followed by a detailed description of the research methodology, data analysis, and the presentation of findings. The study's implications for theory and practice, as well as recommendations for future research, will be discussed in the concluding chapter.

Footnotes:

Jadidian, A., & Duffy, R.
