Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Examination malpractice is a pervasive issue that significantly impacts the educational system in Nigeria. This research project explores the effects of examination malpractices on the educational system in Nigeria. The study delves into the various forms of malpractices such as cheating, collusion, impersonation, and leakage of examination questions. It also examines the underlying factors contributing to the prevalence of examination malpractices, including societal pressure, inadequate preparation, lack of ethical values, and corruption within the system. The consequences of examination malpractices on the educational system are far-reaching. They undermine the credibility and reliability of academic assessments, leading to a devaluation of educational qualifications. The prevalence of malpractices erodes the integrity of the educational system and diminishes the quality of graduates produced. This, in turn, affects the overall reputation of educational institutions in Nigeria and hampers efforts to improve the standard of education in the country. Furthermore, examination malpractices have detrimental effects on students' academic performance and character development. Students who engage in malpractices are deprived of the opportunity to acquire knowledge and develop critical thinking skills. Instead, they rely on dishonest means to achieve academic success, which hampers their intellectual growth and moral development. Moreover, the normalization of cheating and unethical behavior in examinations perpetuates a culture of dishonesty and corruption among students, posing a long-term threat to the integrity of the academic community. In addition to the negative impact on students, examination malpractices also affect the credibility of the Nigerian educational system internationally. The prevalence of malpractices raises concerns among foreign institutions and employers about the quality and authenticity of academic credentials obtained in Nigeria. This, in turn, hinders the mobility and recognition of Nigerian graduates in the global job market, limiting their opportunities for further education and career advancement. In conclusion, the effects of examination malpractices on the educational system in Nigeria are multifaceted and profound. Addressing this issue requires a comprehensive approach that involves stakeholders at all levels, including policymakers, educators, parents, and students. By implementing stringent measures to deter malpractices, promoting ethical values, and fostering a culture of academic integrity, the Nigerian educational system can combat the scourge of examination malpractices and uphold the standards of excellence and credibility in education.
