Thesis Abstract

Adolescent mental health remains a critical concern worldwide, with rising incidences of depression, anxiety, and emotional distress adversely affecting academic performance, social development, and overall well-being. Despite increasing awareness, accessible and effective intervention strategies within school environments are limited, necessitating innovative approaches that leverage peer support mechanisms. This study aims to design, implement, and evaluate a peer counseling program tailored to enhance adolescent mental health in secondary schools, particularly targeting students aged 13–19 years. The specific objectives are to (1) develop a culturally relevant peer counseling framework grounded in the Social Learning Theory and Self-Efficacy Theory; (2) assess the program’s feasibility and acceptability among students and school staff; (3) evaluate the program’s effectiveness in reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression; and (4) identify facilitators and barriers to successful implementation. The research adopts a mixed-methods design comprising a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group approach supplemented by qualitative interviews. The sample consists of 200 students from two comparable secondary schools, randomly assigned to intervention and control groups, and 20 peer counselors selected through purposive sampling based on academic standing, communication skills, and expressed interest in mental health. Data collection instruments include validated scales such as the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) for depression, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) scale for anxiety, and a program acceptability questionnaire. Additionally, semi-structured interviews with students, peer counselors, and school staff capture qualitative insights into the program’s implementation process. Quantitative data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired t-tests, and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) to determine the intervention’s impact on mental health indicators. Hierarchical multiple regression will also explore potential moderating variables such as gender and prior mental health history. Qualitative data will undergo thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke’s methodology to identify recurrent themes related to program perceptions, challenges, and sustainability. Ethical considerations include obtaining informed consent, ensuring confidentiality, and securing approval from an institutional review board. It is hypothesized that students participating in the peer counseling program will demonstrate a statistically significant reduction in anxiety and depression scores compared to the control group, with positive perceptions of the program’s relevance and effectiveness. The expected findings will provide evidence supporting peer-led interventions as viable strategies for improving adolescent mental health in school settings. Moreover, the study aims to contribute to the theoretical understanding of peer influence and self-efficacy in mental health promotion among adolescents, extending existing models by integrating contextual factors identified during qualitative analysis. This research offers significant practical implications for policymakers, school administrators, and mental health practitioners seeking scalable, cost-effective approaches to enhance adolescent psychological resilience. It underscores the importance of peer support systems within educational environments and provides a replicable framework adaptable across diverse culturally contexts. The study concludes with specific recommendations for integrating peer counseling programs into standard school mental health strategies, including training modules, ongoing supervision, and stakeholder engagement. It also suggests avenues for future research, such as longitudinal studies examining the enduring effects of peer support interventions on adolescents’ mental health trajectories. Ultimately, this study aims to fill existing gaps by providing empirical evidence on the design, implementation, and efficacy of peer counseling initiatives, offering a sustainable pathway toward healthier adolescent populations.

Thesis Overview

This research focuses on creating and testing a peer counseling program aimed at improving mental health among adolescents. Adolescence is a critical period when mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and stress often develop, yet there are limited accessible, youth-friendly support systems in many environments. Peer counseling involves trained students providing support to their classmates, which can be more relatable and comfortable for young people compared to traditional professional counseling. The study starts with understanding the current mental health challenges faced by adolescents and assessing existing support mechanisms. It then designs a peer counseling program tailored to the specific context, including selecting and training peer counselors, developing counseling guidelines, and planning implementation strategies. The researcher will implement the program in selected schools or community centers. Data collection will involve baseline surveys to measure adolescents’ mental health status before the program begins, followed by periodic assessments during and after the intervention. Qualitative data, such as focus group discussions and interviews, will gather insights into participants’ experiences. Quantitative data will be analyzed using statistical techniques like paired t-tests or ANOVA to evaluate changes over time in mental health indicators, while qualitative data will be examined through thematic analysis to understand participants’ perceptions and the program's social impact. The expected contribution of this research is providing evidence on whether peer counseling can effectively improve adolescent mental health and offering a practical framework for implementation in similar settings. The findings will also highlight the strengths and limitations of peer-led support in addressing mental health needs. Overall, the study aims to generate knowledge that can inform policymakers, educators, and mental health practitioners about the viability of peer counseling as an accessible, cost-effective, and sustainable approach to enhancing adolescent well-being. The anticipated outcome is a validated model that can be scaled up or adapted for broader use in different educational or community environments.
