The efficacy of career guidance services among high school students remains a critical determinant in shaping students' career choices and aspirations, yet their impact within urban and rural settings has not been comprehensively compared. This study investigates the differential effectiveness of career guidance programs delivered in urban and rural high schools, aiming to identify factors influencing guidance efficacy, and to recommend context-specific improvements. The research employs a comparative cross-sectional design, targeting a population of 2,000 senior secondary school students from publicly funded high schools across a mid-sized country. A stratified random sampling technique was used to select a representative sample of 1,200 students, comprising 600 from urban schools and 600 from rural schools, ensuring balanced representation based on gender, socio-economic status, and academic performance. Data collection was conducted through the administration of a validated survey instrument titled the Career Guidance Effectiveness Scale (CGES), which measures perceptions of guidance quality, career decision-making self-efficacy, and career maturity. To deepen the understanding of contextual influences, focus group discussions were held with guidance counselors and teachers, and school demographic data were also collected to contextualize findings. It offers practical implications for policymakers and educators for tailoring guidance programs to meet regional needs, promoting equitable access and improving career counseling outcomes. The main conclusion emphasizes that contextual adaptations are essential for enhancing the efficacy of career guidance services across different regions. Based on the findings, it is recommended that resource allocation be prioritized to rural schools to bridge existing gaps, with targeted training programs for counselors to enhance guidance delivery. Further research should explore longitudinal impacts of guidance interventions and include diverse demographic variables such as ethnicity and urbanization level, to develop more comprehensive guidance frameworks adaptable to a wider array of educational environments.

The researcher will start by reviewing existing literature on career guidance and its effectiveness, focusing on studies that compare different environments. Next, they will adopt a quantitative research design using a cross-sectional approach. The population will consist of high school students in urban and rural areas within a specific region, with a sample size of around 300 students (150 from urban schools and 150 from rural schools), selected through stratified random sampling.
Data will be collected via a structured questionnaire measuring students’ perceptions of career guidance effectiveness, their career decision-making skills, and their satisfaction with the guidance received. The reliability and validity of the instrument will be tested before data collection.
The analysis will involve descriptive statistics to describe the data, and inferential tests such as ANOVA to compare the two groups. The researcher will interpret the findings in light of existing theories like Super’s Life-Span, Life-Space Theory and Social Cognitive Career Theory, to understand how environmental factors influence career guidance outcomes.
This study aims to contribute new knowledge on the contextual factors that affect career guidance efficacy and inform policy recommendations for improving services in both urban and rural settings. It is expected that the findings will highlight specific areas for intervention to bridge the gap in career counseling effectiveness across different regions.
