Thesis Abstract
Urban youth unemployment remains a persistent challenge, compounded by limited access to effective career guidance services within community settings. This study investigates the impact of career guidance programs on youth employment outcomes in urban community centers, aiming to evaluate the effectiveness of these interventions and identify key factors influencing their success. The specific objectives include assessing the extent to which career guidance influences employment rates among youth, examining participants’ perceptions of the guidance provided, and identifying barriers and facilitators to successful employment post-guidance. The research adopts a mixed-methods design, integrating quantitative and qualitative approaches to provide a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon. The quantitative component employs a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design, with a sample of 300 youths aged 15-24 selected through stratified random sampling from ten urban community centers. Data collection involves structured questionnaires measuring employment status, career decision-making self-efficacy, and satisfaction with guidance services, alongside official employment records where available. The qualitative phase involves semi-structured interviews with a purposively selected subset of 30 participants, community center coordinators, and career guidance counselors, providing rich insights into participant experiences and contextual factors affecting employment outcomes. Data analysis utilizes descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation, frequency distributions) to profile participants and employment trends. Inferential analyses include multiple regression analysis to assess the predictive power of perceived guidance quality on employment status, and ANOVA tests to compare employment outcomes across different centers. Thematic analysis is applied to qualitative interview transcripts, guided by Herzberg’s Motivation-Hygiene Theory and Social Cognitive Career Theory, to identify common themes related to barriers and enablers of successful employment following career guidance. Expected findings suggest that effective career guidance significantly correlates with improved employment outcomes, mediated by increased self-efficacy and clearer career decision pathways. Participants are anticipated to report higher satisfaction when guidance services are tailored to individual needs and complemented by ongoing support. The study also anticipates identifying systemic and personal barriers, such as limited guidance resources, socio-economic constraints, and psychological factors, which impede employment despite guidance participation. This research will contribute to existing literature by providing empirical evidence on the specific impact of community-based career guidance programs within urban settings, addressing a notable gap concerning the contextual effectiveness of such interventions. It advances understanding of the mechanisms through which guidance influences youth employment and develops a conceptual model illustrating the pathways from guidance provision to employment outcomes, emphasizing the roles of self-efficacy, perceived support, and contextual barriers. The main conclusion underscores the critical role of comprehensive, participatory career guidance services in enhancing youth employment in urban areas. Recommendations include policy emphasis on the expansion and standardization of community-based guidance programs, increased investment in counselor training, and integration of guidance services with broader socio-economic interventions. Further research is suggested to explore longitudinal effects of career guidance over time and to evaluate specific strategies tailored for marginalized youth populations. This study ultimately aims to inform stakeholders — including policymakers, community organizations, and educational institutions — on effective practices for fostering sustainable youth employment through targeted career guidance initiatives.
Thesis Overview
This research explores how career guidance services provided in urban community centers can influence the employment prospects of young people. Many urban areas face high youth unemployment rates, and community centers often serve as accessible places where youth can receive advice on choosing careers, developing skills, and transitioning into the workforce. However, the effectiveness of these guidance programs has not been thoroughly evaluated, and there is limited knowledge about how they impact youth employment outcomes. This study aims to fill that gap by assessing whether and how career guidance offered within these centers helps young people secure jobs, improve job readiness, or gain clarity about their career paths.
The researcher will follow a systematic process to investigate this issue. First, they will identify a sample of youth who have utilized career guidance services at selected urban community centers, aiming for a sample size of around 200 participants. Data collection will involve structured questionnaires to gather information about participants’ career guidance experiences, employment status before and after the guidance, and various personal and socio-economic factors. To deepen the understanding, focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with career counselors will also be conducted.
The collected data will be analyzed using statistical methods such as regression analysis to identify relationships between career guidance and employment outcomes, and thematic analysis for qualitative data to explore participants' perceptions and experiences. The researcher expects to find that targeted career guidance significantly improves youth employment rates and job readiness, especially when programs are tailored to individual needs.
This study contributes to the body of knowledge by providing empirical evidence on the role of community-based career guidance in tackling youth unemployment. The findings will help community centers, policymakers, and practitioners enhance the effectiveness of career guidance services, ultimately leading to better employment support for urban youth. The expected outcome is a set of practical recommendations for designing more impactful career guidance programs that can be adopted across similar urban settings.
